PERSONALIZE YOUR NEW HOME LANDSCAPE

Are you a new Frisco resident? Would you like your yard to stand out in your neighborhood? Break away from builder-style landscaping and create something unique by "rethinking the "traditional yard." Follow these tips to create a personalized and water-efficient landscape.

Match your landscape to your lifestyle:
  • Need space for kids or pets?  If you anticipate heavy foot traffic, adjust your landscape to include hardy native groundcovers that can take a beating, such as frogfruit or horseherb.
  • Do you love to entertain outdoors? Consider converting a portion of your lawn to hardscape to accommodate these gatherings.
  • Are there young shade trees planted in your yard? When mature, these trees will provide cooling shade to enjoy with family and friends, but plant species that require full sun to thrive will not do well in shaded areas. Plan to expand your mulch beds as your trees grow, or you can eventually swap out sun-loving plants for those that love the shade.
Save money by adjusting your irrigation system:
  • Builders often leave a new home's irrigation system on "swamp mode," in an attempt to establish the brand new lawn and landscape.  After moving into your new home, reset your controller to a more reasonable weekly program to prevent water (and money) waste over time.
  • Don't miss out on Frisco's FREE Sprinkler Checkup. The City of Frisco's own licensed irrigators can walk you through your sprinkler system controller and help you set up an automatic program, personalized to your home landscape's water needs. Schedule yours  today using the myFrisco app or by calling 972-292-5800.

FERTILIZE YOUR LAWN - THE RIGHT WAY

The dense clay soil here in North Texas is capable of absorbing no more than about .10” of water per hour.  Not realizing this, many homeowners often apply too much water to their lawn, too quickly.  Unfortunately, this common practice wastes thousands of gallons of water as the excess simply "runs off" down the street.  This runoff water eventually flows into Frisco's storm drains, but by the time it reaches Frisco's creeks and streams, it is no longer clean. Sprinkler system runoff collects and transports many pollutants - especially lawn chemicals like fertilizer.

When fertilizer pollutes our ponds, lakes and waterways, it can decrease oxygen levels and increase the possibility of algal bloomsAlgal blooms can cause drinking water to have an odor and unpalatable taste.  On top of that, this phenomenon can make survival difficult for many species of beneficial aquatic life.

The good news is - there's a better way!  When you fertilize your lawn here in Frisco, do it right the first time, to prevent sprinkler system runoff and harmful stormwater pollution!
  1. Fertilize only in SPRING and FALL.  Allowing grass to go "dormant" during the summer and winter seasons is healthier for your lawn. Not to mention, dormant grass means less maintenance for you!
  2. When you do fertilize, make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions.  It's easy to assume that "more means better results" when it comes to chemical application, but using fertilizer, herbicides or pesticides in a way that was not intended by the manufacturer can be dangerous (and is actually against the law).
  3. Water your lawn using to the Cycle and Soak method.  Give the fertilizer you pay for a better chance of nourishing the lawn you pay for!  The Cycle and Soak Method helps you keep your fertilizer where it belongs (and out of that downstream community's source of drinking water).
