If you have encountered more ticks than ever this season, you are not alone.  Find out what to do about them in this article by Alan Marble.
As the summer season speeds to a close, the Crystal Lake & Watershed Association would like to remind cottage owners that it’s time to make sure their septic systems are in good shape. Malfunctioning systems can leak harmful substances into the groundwater and watershed, ultimately into Crystal Lake. Since much of this is a mystery to those of us raised with sewers, the CLWA suggests this user friendly information from the Environmental Protection Agency. “Top 10 Ways to Be a Good Septic Owner”  is a simple reminder and “A Homeowners’ Guide to Septic Systems” is more complete. For those who rent their cottages or host visitors, these printable flyers will help inform your guests how to protect the system.
Many of us use dehumidifiers in our cottages. About 2 million dehumidifiers made by New Widetech are being recalled in the U.S. because they can overheat and catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards. The dehumidifiers were sold at Lowe's, Costco, Walmart, Menards and other retailers in the U.S. from February 2009 through August 2017.      As many of us are in the process —or already have — closed the cottage for the season, we’d love to know what cottage closing (and opening!) traditions you do. Is it always making sure you grab a Dairy Maid as you roll out of town or when you open the cottage, you sing a silly song as you pull into the drive?
Whatever fun, quirky traditions we’d love to compile and write a piece over the winter/spring. Share your ideas/stories via gbrownell@gmail.com.

Thank you to our Communications/Archives Intern Loren Weiss who did an outstanding job for us this summer. She has finished here and is on her way to college at Appalachian State University. Read her final Blog here.
Laura Pacchini taught this Art Workshop on the Crystal knoll on August 9th.
