As the summer season speeds to a close, the Crystal Lake & Watershed Association would like to remind cottage owners that it’s time to make sure their septic systems are in good shape. Malfunctioning systems can leak harmful substances into the groundwater and watershed, ultimately into Crystal Lake. Since much of this is a mystery to those of us raised with sewers, the CLWA suggests this user friendly information from the Environmental Protection Agency. “Top 10 Ways to Be a Good Septic Owner” is a simple reminder and “A Homeowners’ Guide to Septic Systems” is more complete. For those who rent their cottages or host visitors, these printable flyers will help inform your guests how to protect the system.
Many of us use dehumidifiers in our cottages. About 2 million dehumidifiers made by New Widetech are being recalled in the U.S. because they can overheat and catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards. The dehumidifiers were sold at Lowe's, Costco, Walmart, Menards and other retailers in the U.S. from February 2009 through August 2017. Full article here.
