Improved road safety and connectivity

Works are progressing well on Paradise Street 2B upgrade in South Mackay.

Motorists are advised that from August 23, George Street will be temporarily closed at the intersection of George and Milton streets for four weeks as part of Stage 2 works.

Once complete, the area will offer improved road safety and connectivity for students and pedestrians.

From The Chambers: Mayor Greg Williamson shares an update following this week’s ordinary meeting of council. Items of interest include motions for LGAQ Annual Conference and COVID-19 hardship grants of up to $2000 available for not-for-profit sporting and community groups until the end of this month.

Subsidised exercise programs on offer 

The new Activate Mackay Region program offers residents the choice of six different exercise classes for the price of a cup of coffee.
 
Zumba, ninja warrior, zuu, yoga, pilates and aqua fitness are all on offer for just five dollars per session (paid directly to the service providers).
 
Council’s Sport and Recreation Advisory Committee chair Cr Michelle Green said the program kicked off this week and featured five experienced local fitness providers hosting classes in accessible locations.

Juliet Street upgrade
works under way

A major road rehabilitation project for busy Juliet Street, between George and Boddington streets, has commenced.
 
The project will be completed in stages to minimise traffic disruptions, starting on the southern lanes in Juliet Street.
 
All traffic will be switched to the northern lanes whilst this work is occurring. It will continue with two-way traffic flow but will be single lane in each direction and at reduced speeds.

Hardship grants extended for groups affected by COVID-19

The COVID-19 hardship grant for not-for-profit sporting and community groups has been extended.
 
Council allocated $250,000 in funding as part of the 2021-2022 budget, with sporting and community groups able to apply for up to $2000 to assist with the impact of COVID-19.

Applications have been extended and close at midnight on Tuesday, August 31.

Kick-start your career
with council

The popular academic bursary program is back, offering university students the chance to gain valuable work experience and financial assistance.
 
Council has five academic bursaries up for grabs, worth $5000 each, plus paid work experience with a council team that aligns with your area of study.
 
The program was put on hold last year with the outbreak of the pandemic but is being offered again for those wanting to kick-start their career.
