COMMUNICATIONS

Communications Director, here! On Tuesday, we commemorated St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr. Special thanks to Julia Flor, one of LCC's communications interns, for putting this piece together to help us remember the people of God from centuries past, that we might imitate their faith and good works according to our calling. Stay tuned for more!

MISSION MINUTE

With the forthcoming 'BACK TO BASICS' themed issue of The Canadian Lutheran magazine, we wanted to provide this visual reminder of the six chief parts of Luther's Small Catechism. You can find it in your copy of the magazine (which is on its way to your church mailbox) and you can also download it as a printable PDF on our Devotional Resources page here:

SERMON OF THE WEEK

These weekly sermons, written by various LCC pastors, are primarily intended for congregations without a pastor and for those unable to provide online services during exceptional circumstances. Each written sermon is accompanied by the Collect of the Day, appointed Scripture Readings, suggested hymns, and prayers. The Scripture Readings are from the Three-Year Lectionary Series of the Lutheran Service Book (LSB). The suggested hymns are taken from Lutheran Service Book: Hymn Selection Guide – (OT) are hymns that fit with the Old Testament Reading, (E) the Epistle, and (G) the Gospel.

CONVENTION NEWS

DID YOU KNOW . . .

In past years a synod and a district convention were held every three years, but under our new structure there is now only one convention scheduled every four years at which every congregation or parish in LCC is represented by two members – their pastor and a lay delegate.  Forms for the appointment of pastor and lay delegates to the 2022 Synod Convention will be sent to all congregations in September.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ONLINE - COVID-ERA MINISTRY IN FRENCH : Quebec-France
For the first time ever, LCC francophones have access to a theological training programme in French, thanks to an online programme being offered by the ÉGLISE ÉVANGÉLIQUE LUTHÉRIENNE - SYNODE DE FRANCE. That church body has graciously invited LCC members to participate.  Four individuals from Quebec have submitted their applications for this lay training that extends over two years, starting in September, 2021.  The goal is to prepare church members in an orderly, systematic fashion in order to better serve the church in a variety of ways in light of ever-changing mission opportunities.

In a serendipitous turn of events, a recent email from Australia to LCC led to the inclusion of three students from Burundi in the programme. Wonders never cease. Three ÉÉL-SF pastors including pastor Garry Heintz from Canada will be teaching the courses. Pastor J. T. Haessig is coordinator of the programme. This opportunity is yet another example of the closer relations between LCC French ministries and the ÉÉL-SF because of COVID's electronic  developments in the churches.

We Reflect God's Generosity

“What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent?”  Luke 11:11

Where do we get our generous, giving spirit from? We are able to be generous because God first is generous with us. All good and perfect gifts come from the Father. The Holy Spirit who, being God, is the greatest good we could imagine. Our greatest need is to be filled continually with the Holy Spirit. So Jesus instructs us to come as needy children and ask the Father to pour out His Spirit upon us. In addition to our spiritual needs, God provides for all our material needs as well. As a result, we are free to reflect his generosity in our lives. We can be generous in raising our children, serving our neighbour, and supporting our Church. In these three areas, home, society, and Church, the Lord has called us to show His grace and generosity to those around us.

When we think about being great stewards with the material blessings we have received from our Father, we can be generous in how we distribute these blessings. An often overlooked area is the creation of a charitable gift to support ministry so that others come to understand God’s love for them. Wise planning decisions enable us to bless our families and the ministries we cherish. To learn more about developing truly generous estate plans, please visit www.lutheranfoundation.ca for more information, or contact your regional Foundation Gift Coordinator.

Should you provide your appointed executor a copy of your will? The job of being an executor of an estate has become more difficult each year, especially as tax rules and reporting requirements change. Executors are more aware of the personal liability and stress that might accompany their roles, which may lead them to renounce the appointment. Although it is not necessary to provide a copy of your Will to your executor at the time of writing, especially if you think it might change over time, it is very important to have a Will that is clear, well written, grants all the appropriate authorities, and deals concisely with the distribution of assets. A well written Will reduces problems. A helpful addition to your estate plan is a Personal information Directory, which provides important information about financial accounts, insurance policies, credit cards and loans, online accounts, legal and financial representative contact information and family contact information. A copy of this document is available on the Foundation’s website under Resources. To learn more about developing good estate plans, please visit www.lutheranfoundation.ca or contact your regional gift coordinator.

TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (Proper 15B)
(August 15, 2021)
Proverbs 9:1–10 or Joshua 24:1–2a, 14–18
Ephesians 5:6–21
John 6:51–69

Jesus Is the Word and Wisdom of God, Who Gives You Life and Light in His Flesh

Jesus is the divine Word by whom all things were made, who has become flesh and dwells among us. He gives His flesh “for the life of the world,” not only as a sacrifice for sin but as “the living bread” from heaven (John 6:51). Eat His flesh and drink His blood (John 6:54–57), and no longer walk in the darkness of sin, but walk in His light. “Arise from the dead” and live in Him, because you are “light in the Lord” (Eph. 5:8, 14). Being filled with His Spirit, confess Him to “one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart” (Eph. 5:18–19). Fear, love and trust in Him, “and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness” (Josh. 24:14). For He has brought you “out of the house of slavery” by His cross and resurrection, and now He does “great signs” in your sight (Josh. 24:17). Indeed, He is the divine wisdom, who has built His house, prepared His feast and set His table; He bids you to recline and eat of His bread and drink of the wine He has mixed (Prov. 9:1–5).
