Some of Those Years
North Dakota History, Vol. 44, No. 2, Spring 1977
In 1907, 11-year-old Enid Bern came with her family to southwestern North Dakota from Wisconsin. In this article, Enid writes of the devastation caused by a prairie fire that took everything the family owned, as well as how her family recovered from the fire. She also recounts her school days and what her family did for entertainment during the lonely winter months. Enid wrote of the years before the fire in The Enchanted Years on the Prairie, which was featured in our May 2017 e-newsletter.

Step Back in Time at Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site
Fort Abercrombie was the first permanent U.S. military fort established in Dakota Territory in 1858, guarding the fur trade era’s oxcart trails, military supply wagon trains, and stagecoach routes, as well as steamboat traffic on the Red River. Today, visitors can view the Red River as it flows north, try on period clothing, pose for a picture with the site wagon, climb to the top of the reconstructed blockhouses to keep watch for travelers, and explore remnants of an underground tunnel used to retrieve water when the fort was under siege.
