Summer Happenings
Greetings! This newsletter is a true update of each of our programs. While trying to keep the information succinct, there is still a lot to rejoice about. Hope you have the time to read all that has been happening over the last few months!
Reach - Summer Youth Program
Summer...a time to play and have fun, visit new places, and just have a break from the school schedule. For most families summer is a great time to be together and plan trips together. But, like many working families, summer can also be difficult for refugee youth since parents work and often the children are bored. So, this summer, Glocal in collaboration with Gates of Hope and Idaho Office for Refugees, held a summer program on Tuesdays for children in the neighborhood. Each week had a theme, based on building character, and activities designed around that. Tidwell Social Services came each week and did lessons on "Caring for Me". Collister Library also joined in providing books and opportunities to read and learn more about the library. There were a few field trips mixed in as well to the State Capital and to a local park. Tuesday was a favorite day for Nick and Laura but also exhausting as we tried to keep up with the kids. We have been thankful to dive into working with youth a bit more over this past year and look forward to what the Lord is going to do going forward.
Women's English Class
Above is the picture we took at the end of the year celebration for English Class. It was the first time we had gathered in person this March, 2019. Not all were able to join but it was a great celebration as these ladies and the volunteers had worked so hard to learn English over zoom. it was quite the challenge to hold classes via zoom each week. We had 6 to 7 groups that would go into breakout rooms and do their best to learn new words/phrases and have the opportunity to connect. We even had ladies join us from Columbia and Egypt as friends told friends about our zoom class. Laura is so thankful for all the help and encouragement that we received to keep the class going, even on-line!

We are hoping for the opportunity to meet in person this coming year and will be at a new facility. We need teachers, childcare workers and drivers if you want to get involved. We appreciate all the help we can get. If you are interested, please let Laura know: lauraa@glocalboise.org.
Garden Growth
If you live in Boise and you have driven by Maple Grove and Ustick, you will notice that it is hard to see much of the Glocal garden since the corn has grown so tall. It's a beautiful thing to see the fruits of the gardener's labor, the tender care given, and the gift of water and sun that make this garden thrive. Thank you to all of you who contributed to the water fund in order to have enough water for this hot, dry summer. Whenever we walk near the garden, we are often greeted by Rahmatullah, one of the master gardeners. He is the sweetest and very generous, often filling our arms with some of his produce. Six new plots were also opened at Faith Community Bible Church for which we are so thankful. Carolyn continues to do a great job managing the garden and connecting with the gardeners.

Tonight, August  14, sorry for the late notice, we will be having our annual Garden Pot Luck. You are more than welcome to join us. It will be at Cole Community Church, 8775 Ustick Road - in the Fireside Room at 6:00 pm, August 14. Please bring a dish to share that is labeled. No pork is preferred.
Baby Showers
Baby Showers have not looked the same this past year and are definitely not our preferred way of doing things. For most of the year, Michelle and team have been delivering gifts to Moms who are expecting or just had their babies. We even hoped this past Saturday to hold the first shower in over a year but because of the heat and Covid risk, we felt better about delivering the gifts again. The picture above is Michelle and Melissa delivering gifts to a first-time Mom. Not what we wanted, but like so much of this past year, we are doing the best with the circumstances we are in. Over the past 2 months, 13 families were delivered baby items which is always a huge blessing. At one point Michelle was out of several items, put a call out on Facebook and within 2 hours God had provided all the items, either via a money donation or the actual items. We actually have a joke that Michelle's porch is the Blessing Porch because of how items, like diapers, just show up. God has provided abundantly for these Moms and families through the faithful giving of so many. Thank you so much!!
Donations
Thanks to some great donation teams, people donating items and great coordinators (Berna and Carolyn), our Donations Ministry has continued on. One family who received items recently was just moved into a new Habitat for Humanity home and needed clean, new to them furniture. They found us via the internet and we were able to help with furnishings and other household items. It was a HUGE blessing to help out this sweet family who came to Boise from Iraq as refugees some years ago. Nancy and new volunteer Kathy have been organizing the shed with household items. They have packed up a couple of housing kits so that they are ready for a family moving into their first American Home.  What a delight to see how the Lord has provided so much, through so many people donating items to this ministry which makes an apartment a welcoming home to families.

We are always in need of HYGIENE/CLEANING items so if you are looking for an easy project to do, send Laura an email and I can send you a list. Thank you!
Leap Housing
Our friends over at LEAP are relaunching their Welcome Housing program and hoping to create an even more inviting and welcoming home for families arriving through refugee resettlement. If you are interested in purchasing an item or two off of their Amazon Wish List, you can check out the button below. Please email brittany@leapcharities.org if you have any questions."

Glocal's Prayers and Praises
Prayer Needs:
  • We have been waiting to connect a friendship partner team with a family who arrived within the last year but it seems like one thing or another keeps that from happening. Please ask the Lord to work this out so that they can meet soon.
  • We have another couple who are ready to connect with a family in friendship. Please pray that we will be able to make that connection soon and they will have a good connection with this family.
  • Pray that we will be able to start Women's English Class in person on Sept. 16. We need wisdom and guidance for this. We also need new volunteers to help out so please pray for God's provision for that!
  • Praise God for the provision of a Grant through the Laura Moore Cunningham foundation. This will help with housing needs - rent help, utilities and transitional housing through Leap Charities. Our hearts are just beyond thankful!!
