GAYography

LGBTQI World News, Advocacy & Virtual Travel & Events

All the Gay News That's Fit to Link

Made possible by Ashton, the GAYographer
Good morning <<First Name>>,

How are you doing?

It's been a minute - I was with Alex's family in Italy and then through Malta - with sub-optimal wifi.

I wanted you to also know - I'm focusing in on travel and assisting with trips so if you need a travel expert, I'm here!

Below I'm sendinglots to catch up on - including honoring the first trans & non-binary athlete to win a medal (above) - as part of Canada's women's soccer team.

Stay safe out there,

Ashton

P.S. Do you know trans children or parents of trans kids who are headed back to school? The US Government created this video to give them support.
Amid COVID and controversy, the 2020 (21) Tokyo Olympics at least provided a platform for the most LGBTQ athletes ever - at 168 - the AP says a "rainbow wave." Of course, the most famous gay is Tom Daley who won gold with (maybe not yet out?) Matty Lee. Besides the first trans, non-binary medalist Quinn on The Canadian women's team, there's also Alexis Sablone who just missed the stage - placing 4th in women's street skating. Of course, trans weightlifter Laurel Hubbard made history as the first trans person in an individual sport.
Ambassador James Hormel passed away on Aug 13 in San Francisco. As the first openly gay Ambassador appointed, he went through an arduous confirmation process, which ultimately failed as Clinton appointed him during a Congressional recess in 1999 to Luxembourg. Heir to Hormel Family Foods, he used his wealth to support a variety of LGBTQ causes, including being a co-founder of the Human Rights Campaign. He is survived by his husband, Michael, as well as 5 children, 14 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
COVID update: now 1 in 8 Americans have contracted COVID - and one in 500 have died. Yet, we are allowed to visit other countries - and anyone else is banned from entry, unless on some type of essential travel (and the land-border restrictions were renewed through Sept 21 for Canada and Mexico). Here's the COVID case map of Europe - cases are definitely higher in places where we all want to travel! Inside the US, the courts are providing a last line of defense against Governors, like Abbott in Texas (who contracted COVID himself) to ensure mask mandates stay in place.

Attacks and harassment of LGBTQ people and advocates in Ukraine continue to increase.

Brothers forcibly returned to Chechnya in January continue to face incarceration and torture - they stand accused of terrorism.

Hungary's election pan cleared referendum questions that will ask citizens if they approve of LGBTQ issues in schools.

The LA Times squarely asks for Biden's help as LGBTQ Afghans face impending execution. A small group has created a GoFundMe page to help those trapped survive and escape.

An unknown assailant brutally killed a lesbian couple camping in Utah.

The New York Times highlighted a trans runner from Minnesota struggling with whether she has an advantage or not - she says, put politics aside and actually let science speak.

Exciting news for trans rights - Hobby Lobby Stores lost their case - and must pay for emotional distress and attorney fees - brought
by a trans woman who was disciplined for using the women's bathroom in Illinois.

Politico posits that the US Republican Party has conceded marriage equality, as new party members accept at least gay & lesbian rights.

Still wondering what Ric Grenell was up to during his time supposedly promoting LGBTQ rights globally under Trump? The Washington Blade is now suing the US State Department for his emails.

Going to Poland? Boycotts are not always the best option - but I think avoiding this southern region may help! They decided to remain an "LGBT-Free Zone" despite losing EU funding.

Can't get out of the country? Consider queer spots off the beaten track - even in "Red States" - says this award-winning journalist.
