CHFM Bulletin:  August 12

Care of Friends

  • Celebrate Mickey Abraham's birthday on Monday, August 16, by sending love in the form of a birthday card!  Her address is 644 Stetson Road, Elkins Park PA 19027.
  • On Wednesday, August 11, Tee Bushnell shared her happiness that her doctors have given her permission to drive!  A faithful group of Friends have driven Tee twice a week since March from Germantown to Paoli.  Tee deeply appreciates the Meeting for its support of meals, prayers and accompaniment.  It's been a long eight months, but Tee will be returning to teaching at Delaware Valley Friends School.  Go Tee!
  • Leyna Garrettson and Lars Kreutner celebrated a lovely wedding on Saturday, August 7, under the care of the Meeting.  Lars and Leyna said their vows in German and English.  Out of the silence about 40 family and friends offered joyous messages in word and song.  17 more guests were present via Zoom.  Hoagies, fruit, vegetables, carrot and apple cake followed with delighted visiting.  Many thanks to Hospitality, Landscape, Tech, the Flower, and the Wedding Committees for seeing to all the details to make for a perfect event.  Pictures coming in the September newsletter!
  • Eileen Flanagan is in northern Minnesota to support the Indigenous-led campaign against the Line 3 pipeline.  Please continue to hold Eileen and the water protectors in the Light!

To get an item included in the announcements after Meeting for Worship, please e-mail Worship & Ministry Committee with the details by Friday night. Be sure to include all relevant dates, times, and locations as well as the name of a contact person for more information.  This will allow the information to be pasted into the chat window during announcements.

While Friends are encouraged to invite others to our virtual meeting for worship -- just as they would to an in-person meeting -- please do not post these links to social media or other Internet sites.  While some meetings are hosting global meetings with hundreds of participants, we are trying, as best we can in these times, to replicate the feel of our own weekly meeting for worship.

Children's Program, Sunday, August 15 @ 10:30 AM

There is a teacher available weekly to provide programing for your children during meeting for worship.  Children can attend the first 15 minutes of meeting for worship or can join the teacher at 10:30.  All children, all ages are welcome! Teachers will be masked and vaccinated.  Any questions, contact Donna at fdscoord@chestnuthillquakers.org.

From Worship & Ministry: What Don't You Get About Quaker Practice?

One adult class a month in September, October and November will be devoted to addressing your nagging questions about Chestnut Hill's Quaker faith and practice. Whether it's "Do Quakers believe in Jesus?" or "When should I speak in meeting?" or "Do you have to be liberal to be Quaker?" or whatever is on your heart, we want to hear your questions.  To plan our sessions, please let us know what those questions are by answering the following:

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TWO QUESTIONS ABOUT CHESTNUT HILL FRIENDS MEETING'S FAITH AND PRACTICE?

You can respond in any of three ways:  (1) Complete the anonymous online Google Form by clicking this link, (2) send your questions via email to Signe (signe.wilkinson@gmail.com) or Al (alvfcs@gmail.com)  or, (3) write your questions out on paper and mail them to us at Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting, 20 E. Mermaid Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19118. A variety of Friends will help lead the sessions.  If there are particular people you would like to hear, let us know.  We need to hear from you by Sunday, August 15.

Midweek Meeting for Worship, Tuesday, August 17 @ 9 AM

CHFM offers midweek worship on Tuesday mornings from 9 to 10 via Zoom. The stable link for the Zoom sessions is https://zoom.us/j/95949514802?pwd=KzBRWHZWL0QyS3JOYWlVbnlyU2p4dz09,  We will have waiting worship for the first 30 minutes and then we plan to read excerpts from the new edition of Faith and Practice, followed by worship sharing.  All are welcome.

From Skyspace Committee

Greet the Light Skyspace at Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting announced this week that additional dates covering September through November 7 have been added to the schedule hosted on TicketLeap.  Get your tickets now -- September is already sold out!

From Office & Administration Committee

Office Committee is seeking a new parking attendant and back-up event facilitator to work with Cedrick Wright on larger rental events at the meetinghouse, which mostly happen on weekend afternoons and evenings.  The parking attendant arrives half an hour before an event, opens the upper lot, sets up signs to direct traffic to the upper lot, and helps direct traffic for the first hour of the event.  At the end of the event (4 or 5 hours later), the parking attendant returns to put away the signs and close the lot.  When serving as back-up event facilitator, this person would coordinate setup and cleanup for events, and guide renters in following guidelines for building use and parking.  Up to 8 hours, usually on Saturdays, at an hourly rate starting around $15.  Interested individuals, please send your contact information and work history to Robin Smith, meeting secretary, at secretary@chestnuthillquakers.org.

From Chestnut Hill Friends

  • The yard sale Dan Evans had been planning for this Saturday, August 14, has been postponed one week, to Saturday, August 21, still at 9 am.  Corner of E. Willow Grove Avenue and Chandler Road in Cheltenham / Laverock (park on Chandler Road).  Kitchen wares, small appliances, gardening tools, electronics, craft supplies, lamps, and even office and other furniture.  Priced to move because everything must go.
  • Jan Collins is looking for a housing situation that may include house-sitting, companion, room rental or house-mate in this general area. Needed by August 15.  Vaccination received.  If you have or hear of anything, please contact her at jmcollins101@yahoo.com or 484-416-3828.  Thank you.
  • Eileen Flanagan is offering a free online session on Tuesday, August 17, 7:30-9 pm, geared toward people who are considering going to northern Minnesota in support of the Line 3 resistance.  It will focus on nonviolent direct action.  Register through Quaker Earthcare Witness to receive the Zoom link.
  • A review by Manuel Betancourt of Bill di Canzio's new novel Alec, published online on July 6, will appear in the print edition of the New York Times Book Review this coming Sunday, August 15.  A video of Bill's interview with Wendy Moffat, E. M. Forster's biographer, has been posted on YouTube by the Free Library of Philadelphia.
  • From Kay Wood:  I need to downsize dramatically. I plan to move to a much smaller apartment the end of summer. As an artist with a long professional career it's a tough thing to do. I’ve been working on downsizing for years, but still I have a lot of artwork to sell or store or give away. I’d love them to go to a good home. I hope you would be interested in seeing and possibly buying some of my work. It would be at a steep discount. I also have furniture for free. Come take it away, it’s yours. Since 1975 my work has been in dozens of shows in galleries and museums in NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, and abroad. My website (kaywood-art.com/) shows some of my eclectic body of visual artwork.  kaywood.art@gmail.com.

Look Forward to Gathering on Sunday, September 12

A small group of Friends met this week to start planning for a simple, joyful gathering after meeting for worship on Sunday, September 12, to celebrate being able to be together again.  Save the date, and if the idea of a fall homecoming inspires a vision of a fun activity for us to share, reach out to Signe Wilkinson at signe.wilkinson@gmail.com.

Zoom Help & Tutorials

A few other notes about Zoom:
  • A small number of Friends are making themselves available for assistance with technical issues before or during Meeting for Worship.  You can email that group at OnlineWorshipSupport@chestnuthillquakers.org; please also use that address to reach out during Meeting for Worship if you have technical trouble. If you have trouble connecting, please check the Zoom system status page before emailing to see if there are any system-level outages.
  • A particularly Quakerly Zoom tip:  Look to the Light!  If you arrange yourself for a Zoom meeting with a window or a lamp in front of you rather than behind you, we'll all be able to enjoy each other's familiar faces.
  • The links above should take you directly to Zoom meetings.  If, for whatever reason, the link does not work, you can open the Zoom app, click join meeting, and enter the meeting ID number.
  • When Meeting for Worship begins, everyone's microphone will be muted by the host.  If you feel moved to give ministry, you can unmute your microphone.  You will be able to hear the ministry of others even while your microphone is muted.  When your ministry concludes, please mute yourself again to reduce background noise.
  • If you call in by phone, you can use *6 to mute and unmute yourself.
