The Great Axanar Retreat™

TANTRUM Axanar producer Alec Peters reportedly throws a tantrum with a Creation Entertainment official after learning how close his booth was located to his supposed “haters.”

Backfired? The 55-Year Mission convention in Las Vegas, once popularly known as STLV when it was the officially licensed Star Trek convention, looks like it was planned to confirm Axanar as the premier Star Trek fan film. But in execution, Alec Peters’ controversial production appears otherwise.

The retreat. Installed by Creation Entertainment as the leader of STLV’s fan film track, Axanar also had a prime spot on Day 1 in the con’s exhibitors’ hall near the entrance. Until Peters discovered the table was directly behind the booth of Hero Prop, a company headed by Tiana Armstrong, his professional nemesis and legal target.

“Surrounded.” Peters also discovered that also ensconced behind him at the Hero Prop booth was one of his most vocal critics, Shawn O’Halloran, and another of Peters’ legal targets, noted writer and former Axanar director, Paul Jenkins. And next to him was a table featuring known friends of another former Axanar director, Robert Meyer Burnett, and copies of Burnett’s film, Trek fan favorite, 1998’s Free EnterpriseBurnett, of course, is yet another of Peters’ legal targets.

The tantrum. Peters, reputed to be a friend of one of one of Creation’s founders, was seen complaining on the floor of the vendors hall to management about the situation and demanding action. An eyewitness, who described Peters as having “a tantrum” in front of a Creation official, provided AxaMonitor with a photo of the conversation.

New location. By the morning of Day 2, Axanar had disappeared from its booth, which was moved to the far back corner of the hall. Peters helpfully posted a map of the hall for his Facebook followers, neglecting to inform them why the need for the move.

Nature abhors a vacuum. With the former Axanar booth at STLV vacated by Alec Peters, his legal nemesis Tiana Armstrong moved to fill in the space with a display from her company, Hero Prop.

“Team Axanar” Support for Fan Film Appears Lacking at STLV Panel

No show. The fan film track at STLV was supposed to acknowledge Axanar’s pre-eminence in the fan film community, and in the lead up to the Las Vegas convention, producer Alec Peters touted his role in organizing the track and his intent to support the featured productions by showing up to each panel to cheer them on.

In reality, Peters was a no-show at the first of the panels, which featured filmmaker Vance Major Owens, for whom Peters ran a highly publicized GoFundMe to pay for Owens’ travel expenses.

Perhaps Peters was distracted by having to move his booth in the vendors hall. In a Facebook post today, he blamed the “haters” for causing trouble, and he reminded readers he had paid for Owens’ trip. He wrote:

“While the haters are being assholes, and trying to cause problems, I chose to fly Vance in, and give him the opportunity he’s never had. You can either do good in the world, or you can be a dick.”
— even though Peters didn’t fly the fan filmmaker in at his own expense. The trip was financed by donors to Owens’ GoFundMe.
