Reeds Vol 13: Ship Stability, Powering and Resistance, 2nd Edition, Bloomsbury, August 2021

This indispensable guide to ship stability covers essential topics such as flotation and buoyancy, small angle, large angle and longitudinal stability, water density effects, bilging, ship resistance, and advanced hydrostatics. Each chapter has a comprehensive list of aims and objectives at the start of the topic, followed by a checklist at the end of the topic for students to ensure that they have developed all the relevant skills before moving onto the next topic area.

Ship Automation for Marine Engineers and ETOs, 2nd Edition, Witherby, July 2021

This publication looks in detail at the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of onboard electrical systems and appliances. It provides guidance on how to read a variety of electrical diagrams, power and control circuit construction and components, troubleshooting techniques and regular maintenance. It can be used as a comprehensive source of reference for management and operational level engineers as well as ETOs at any stage of their career.

Lifting and Lifting Appliances Aboard Ship, Mike Wall, July 2021

Lifting appliances on board ship, particularly ship’s cranes, are critical to a vessel earning freight. A ship is only earning money, ie, freight, when carrying cargo at sea. If the deck cranes are out of action in port the vessel will have downtime which in turn reduces the vessel’s earning capacity. For this reason, and the safety of the crew, ship’s cranes should be well maintained, usually whilst at sea, to reduce the possibility of port downtime.

Passage Planning Guide: Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait, Witherby, August 2021

This publication has been revised to incorporate the latest guidance and practical advice for ships transiting the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait. It offers additional clarity on subjects such as maximum draught and UKC requirements and Australian MARPOL areas. This is a reliable resource for any crew navigating the region.

This publication is designed to be used as part of the ship's pre-entry procedures and as a tool for refreshing the bridge team each time the ship is planning a passage through the GBRTS. An improved presentation of pull-out chartlets allow the book to be used in real time, giving the navigator an overview that can be lost on ships where the primary means of navigation is ECDIS. Updated traffic information and case studies based on accident reports are effective in illustrating best navigational procedures.

Passage Planning Guidelines 2021 - Incorporating Safe Nav Watch, Teamwork on the Nav Bridge, Witherby, July 2021

The fully updated 2021 edition of Passage Planning Guidelines incorporates three separate publications presented in a slip case.

Passage Planning Guidelines focuses on the Appraisal and Planning stages of voyage planning using traditional methods, paper charts and ECDIS, with fully worked examples throughout. Safe Nav Watch provides guidance on safe bridge watchkeeping and best practice for the Officer of the Watch (OOW). Teamwork on the Nav Bridge is based on original text from a leading trainer of cockpit resource management, which has been fully revised and updated to reflect the key factors on bridge resource management and why it is essential when forming the bridge team.

With over 80 port information sections, it ensures that a complete port overview can be obtained before arrival, including pre-arrival information, details of the documentation required by the port, maximum size of vessel permissible and cargo facilities. Italian Liners of the 1960s : The Costanzi Quartet, Amberley, August 2021

This book tells the story of the four large passenger ships conceived by Costanzi in the late 1950s and early 1960s. These designs incorporated the most celebrated elements of his work and perhaps reflect the man at the very height of his powers.

The 'Costanzi Quartet' comprised Lloyd Triestino's stylish emigrant carriers Galileo Galilei and Guglielmo Marconi, Home Lines' groundbreaking Oceanic and Costa's speed queen, Eugenio C. Profusely illustrated throughout, this book considers their designs and varied careers, as well as offering an insight into life on board through the testimony of passengers and crew.

NAUTILUS BOOKSHOP – BOOKS OF THE MONTH - AUGUST

Water Gypsies: A History of Life on Britain's Rivers and Canals, published April 2021 by History Press
For centuries, living afloat on Britain's waterways has been a rich part of the fabric of our social history, from the fisher folk of ancient Britain to the bohemian houseboat dwellers of the 1950s and beyond. Whether they have chosen to leave the land behind and take to the water or been driven there by necessity, the history of the houseboat is a unique and fascinating seam of British history. In Water Gypsies, Julian Dutton - who was born and grew up on a houseboat - traces the evolution of
boat-dwelling, from an industrial phenomenon in the heyday of the canals to the rise of life afloat as an alternative lifestyle in post-war Britain.

Something in the Blood, February 2021, Self-published
As a child, Chris thought he wanted to be a doctor, but a visit to a training ship convinced him that his future lay at sea. Jonathan on the other hand decided to study medicine but always had a hankering for faraway places, and had a rather romanticised view of the sea based on some of his father's reminiscences. Fate would bring them together, and in an action-packed account this book explores the way in which they re-visited their early aspirations, and decided if indeed they should have followed a different course. They pursued their careers, but always with the occasional thought that, maybe, they had been swayed by circumstances into the wrong direction.

Thames and Medway Shipping Past and Present, February 2021, Self-published
Following the success of the previous books, and with so much more material available, the author received many requests to compile another book, but not just about shipping on the River Thames but to include shipping on the River Medway. To give as much variety as possible he has tried to not only depict ships of yesteryear but also many of the different types of vessels now using the various terminals and jetties.

Reefer Ships, March 2021, Self-published
Following the scanning of some 45,000 slides into jpeg images covering the period 1966 to 2006 it was noted that reefer ships featured prominently. Nearly 500 different vessels photographed mostly around the Thames, Medway, Dover, and some European ports. From this around 170 ships are depicted in this book showing the sleek lines and colour schemes of the variety of ships seen & photographed, many of which are long gone.
