Sticking to its principles, Altra celebrates 10 years of success
By: Brian Metzler

Altra founders Golden Harper and Brian Beckstead didn’t set out simply to build a nifty new running shoe more than a decade ago, they actually wanted to change how people were running.

After their initial start-up phase and two corporate buyouts, they’re still on that path. Owned and operated by VF Corporation since March 2018, the brand relocated to Denver in 2019 and finally moved into its new corporate offices and adjacent design center late last year.

Altra Running is now among the top eight running shoe brands in the U.S. and growing globally, too. Its Lone Peak model is the No. 1 trail running shoe at REI and many other retailers across the country. It stuck to its roots of building shoes with a zero-drop or level platform, a concept that has resonated with retailers and consumers.

“But you know what the funny thing is? We’re not as big as we’d thought we’d be,” Harper said on Aug. 9 in Denver as the brand celebrated its 10th anniversary in business. “We’re big, but we can get bigger because there are a lot more runners we can help.”

Over the past 10 years, Altra has found success because it remained true to its unique design principles. Altra believes that a level or zero-drop platform is inherent to better running form and a reduction of overuse injuries. It quickly grew into one of the biggest brands in the trail running world and has since seen its road running shoes and lifestyle footwear make big strides, too.
Story Continues

Retail analytics firm Placer.ai released a new report showing early success of Dick's House of Sport, a new store concept located in Victor, NY. Based on foot traffic, weekly visits to the store were 93.5% higher than three nearby stores, and the median visit duration was 13.3% longer than the national average. The firm predicted that leveraging concept stores like House of Sport could be highly beneficial to the Dick's brand. Shares were up 3% after the report.

Planet Fitness released earnings on Monday, beating expectations for revenue but missing EPS by $0.02. Also on the call, CEO Chris Rondeau announced the company would expand its footprint to Mexico and open 80 new stores in the next 5 years. And, he addressed mask/vaccine mandates at many locations, saying he hopes delta variant concerns are "short lived." Following the call, shares fell more than 4% in after hours trading.

Nautilus released earnings on Monday, beating expectations for both revenue and earnings. Yet, the company issued warnigns about continued supply chain headwinds, lowering their forecast for margins for the rest of the year. Also, while earnings beat expectations, revenue was down significantly YOY due to lesser demand with gyms reopening. Shares fell over 15% at market open on Tuesday.

Here’s your roundup of new private company deals within the health and wellness sector over the past week.

  • Adidas finally sold its Reebok division for $2.46 billion which is more than $1 billion less than Adidas paid when it acquired the U.S. footwear company in 2006. Authentic Brands Group was the winning bidder in the auction for Reebok. ABG has developed a knack for scooping up fallen angels and its brand portfolio includes Brooks Brothers, IZOD and Juicy Couture.

  • Investment in private sports tech companies overall continues at a near record pace. While unlikely to surpass the $1.4 billion invested in the sector in 2020 as millions of athletes switched to at-home workouts, the numbers so far in 2021 already surpass any other year on record. Check out the details in “It’s Still Early Innings, But Investors Are Looking For Home Runs Among Sports Tech Startups.” When investors see high-profile success stories like Tonal, Mirror, Whoop and Zwift, it begins a feeding frenzy to find the next hot private company that can reach the $1 billion “unicorn” status.

  • Precision nutrition start-up Rootine just raised $3,000,000 in seed financing. Rootine aims to develop custom diet and nutrient plans tailored specifically to its users’ individual needs.

Summertime has come and almost gone but there’s still plenty of time to spice up your runs and hit some trails. Like we mentioned a few weeks back, before going off on the beaten path you’ll want to make sure you have the right footwear to handle the unpredictable types of terrain. One of the most respected trail runners to hit the market this year is Saucony’s Endorphin Trail. By combining some of the best tech features from the Endorphin collection’s Speed, Shift, and Pro; the Endorphin Trail has the capabilities to crank up your hike, climb, or run to a whole new level. Thanks to the generous people at Saucony we were able to give these a test in the hills of New Hampshire over the weekend. Our thoughts are below:

New Hampshire Tester: “I have had these shoes on my radar since they were first announced so I couldn’t wait to hit the hills in them last weekend. The first thing I noticed out of the box is that the shoes are pretty heavy. This isn’t necessarily a knock on the Endorphin Trail because you certainly want a little extra durability around the toe box and around the upper for protection from rocks and roots. For a trail runner, I was surprised by how heavily cushioned the shoe was. The PWRRUN midsole gives the feel that you are in a big cushioned everyday trainer and still has a solid amount of responsiveness while bouncing off hard surfaces. I loved the locked-in feeling the sock-like upper provides. The grippy PWRTrac outsole has 4.5m lugs that you can really feel dig in through muddy conditions. Overall, the Endorphin Trail is a one of a kind trail runner. It has all the tech you would expect from a top of the line racer with the durability you need to fly through any conditions.”

The red hot Endorphin Trail is out now but currently sold out on the Saucony. Check back on their site for restocks soon.
