Here-turi-kōkā | August 2021
 Kia ora koutou,

We had a great time last night at The Complete History of Palmerston North (Abridged) at the Centrepoint Theatre. We were privileged to host a special showing to acknowledge the contribution of Palmy's community and voluntary sector over the 150 years since the founding of our favourite city!
Along with our co-hosts Volunteer Central, we are grateful to PNCC's 150th Anniversary Fund and the Mayor’s office for supporting the night. It was a super way to bring together the 'social' and 'arts' parts of the community sector! It was great to have Councillor Rachel Bowen join us on the night too, as she was integral to the concept and is a champion of the arts and community sectors. A hilarious show, we also learned some history along the way. It's on until 22 August, so don’t miss out!

As you already know, it’s an anniversary year for CSC as well—50 years for us. And as part of this we think it’s time for a new name! Our current name causes a few problems, especially being confused with the City Council, and more recently people trying to book their probation community service as well!

How can we reflect our purpose of connecting, informing and advocating for the community sector/social services in our name? What story do we want to tell? Our members will be meeting next week to discuss this, so expect to hear more in this space. For members, we look forward to seeing you on Thursday—and if you can’t make it, please chat with Tim or myself, or email us your thoughts.

Ngā mihi,
Emma
In this pānui:

PALMERSTON NORTH CITY COUNCIL UPDATE

Kia ora koutou,

Lots of opportunities to have your say this month!

Nominations are open for this year’s Palmerston North Civic Awards. These are the city’s highest recognition for voluntary service and I’d encourage you to put in a nomination for a volunteer from your organisation. Closing date is 15 August and you’ll find all the information you need to nominate someone here.

This week Council made a proposal about the make-up of future councils in the city, deciding to have 13 members elected ‘at large’ i.e. from across the city as a whole in a general ward, and 2 members elected by those on the Māori roll in a Māori ward. This maintains the number at 15 councillors and a mayor. Our proposal will be out for consultation shortly, and we’d like to hear from you about whether this is what you want. We have not proposed any geographical wards or community boards, but if you want these let us know.  Similarly if you have a view about the number of councillors let us know.  It’s worth noting that if we reduce the number of councillors any further, we would only be allowed to have one Maori representative. Note that the remuneration pool and cost to rate payers is the same no matter how many councillors we have. Check out the Council website for the representation review in the next few days.

On to transport now, parking hours are out for consultation until 11 August, so if you’ve got a strong opinion about extended paid parking you can find that consultation here. And our friends at Horizon Regional Council have a couple of proposals for improving the bus service in the city. Let them know which you prefer on their website.

The next Community Development Committee meeting will be at 1pm on Wednesday 22 September. You can attend in person or watch online at the time, or later, on Council’s website and You Tube channel.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. My email is lorna.johnson@pncc.govt.nz

UPDATE FROM OUR MP

Kia Orana kotou katoatoa!

The Dawn Raids apology given over the weekend was a huge milestone for New Zealand. This significant event was undertaken in a culturally appropriate way and was a truly poignant occasion. I felt honoured to be part of this historical moment.

The apology really highlights the significance of culture and diversity and what the Pasifika community bring to all our lives. Our multicultural city is home to an impressive number of cultures, and the positive influence of the Pasifika community is readily apparent. Pasifika Fusion is just one example of a wonderful celebration of creativity, culture, innovation and academic excellence.

Last week I hosted the Community Services Council Managers' Forum. It was a great occasion to hear directly from you all about the issues that matter to you the most. As mentioned at the meeting, I am committed to future opportunities for us to meet and discuss matters of interest for our local community and the wider sector. And of course it was a terrific occasion to say thanks for your valuable mahi.

And it’s Cook Islands language week. Language is at the heart of culture and customs, and critical for keeping our connection to our homelands (wherever they may be) alive. Kia Manuia. Go well and good luck

ENM Strategy Day,
Saturday 14 August, 11am-5pm (lunch Included). At ENM's last strategy day in 2018, we learned about plastic pollution in the local area, discussed the long-held dream of an Enviro Centre, and talked about how to improve biodiversity and community resilience in the region.

What a time of growth and change it has been since then - projects initiated and completed, a move to new publicly-visible premises, the start of a community-led food resilience strategy and a Kiwi habitat restoration project.

It's time to talk about how all this fits together, and how we continue to meet the needs of our members.  We want everyone in the enviro and sustainability sector in the Manawatū to be part of this key conversation. Please RSVP here.

Cancer Society Manawatū
Daffodil Day: Friday August 27
This is a day of hope, a day of remembering, a day of honouring, a day of holding some very special people in our hearts who have lived, or are living their own journey with cancer.

It is a day of offering thanks for the families and friends, doctors, nurses, carers, health workers, Cancer Society volunteers, who support us and give us their care, compassion and expertise.

It is a day to raise much needed funds to help provide support and transport to treatment services for people living with cancer.
It is a day of being inspired by the many communities, schools, workplaces and Councils across Aotearoa New Zealand who strive for a cancer free future for the next generation, where together we can make a real difference in advocating for healthy, smokefree and sunsmart environments where we live, work and play.

Thank you for your support, we couldn’t do this without you!

Amitabha Buddhist Centre
Coping with Challenging Situations Meditation course, every Wednesday 7-8.30pm at Amitabha Buddhist Centre, 174 Albert Street with Birgit Saunders.

Stress and anxiety have the power to destroy our peace of mind and rob us of our happiness. It can present itself in different ways, from a knot in our stomach to feeling restless and not being able to sleep. It can sneak in as a vague sense of irritation or impatience, and may just look like a raised eyebrow, or silence rather than kindness. We will explore how much of the stress and tension we normally experience comes from our mind. Through training in meditation and mindfulness we can reduce this stress.

Gradually we will develop the inner resilience and confidence to view every challenge we meet as an opportunity for personal growth and development. In this way we can all learn what it means to live stress free and genuinely happy.

Hokowhitu Village Centre
Hokowhitu Hidden Books is an exciting new project with the goal to encourage children to engage in reading at new locations in an interesting manner. Hokowhitu Village Centre volunteers distribute and hide books at playgrounds around the Hokowhitu area for children to find and read. Other volunteers read and check the books for damage and suitability before they are hidden. Once discovered,  children can register their find on the Hidden Books Facebook page, and then either re-hide the book or take it home.

The project began at the start of the recent school holidays and very quickly gained over 200 members on the FB page with many positive supportive comments. Volunteers hope to place books every week at selected sites for children to discover throughout the year.

Hokowhitu Hidden Books is also including Te Reo books in the project and are happy to support any other groups who would like to be involved in other areas of the city. Books have been supplied by the Hokowhitu Village Centre, Red Cross Books and volunteer donations but Hokowhitu Hidden Books would be delighted to receive any donations of children’s books for the project, at their Centre in Albert St.

Venue for Hire
Hokowhitu Village Centre have a venue for hire suitable for small groups. Costs start at $23 and comfortably seats 20. For bookings or enquires, please email us.

Strategic Priority Grants

We will fund community organisations whose outcomes directly contribute to Council’s vision: small city benefits, big city ambition.

Our funding priorities are based on the Creative and Liveable Strategy (to achieve Goal 2: A creative and exciting city); the Connected Community Strategy (to achieve Goal 3: A connected and safe community); and the Eco City Strategy (to achieve Goal 4: An eco city).
