Updates, Resources and Reports
The Tea Leaf Center | Issue #27
Welcome back!

What a long month we had. Our Tea Leaf Center staff enjoyed a lot of trainings this month, covering many topics such as ethical principles for research and academic writing. Throughout the courses, we had a chance to broaden our network with both Burmese and Thai local civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations. We hope they could apply the content in the training in their work, especially in the research field.

Coming up next, we will be holding our second Research Skills Webinar Series! This time we will be discussing basic ethical principles in doing research. Do not forget to like us on Facebook to find out more details about date and time of the event!
Date coming soon, follow us on Facebook for more information!
Resources and Tools

With fast economic growth and infrastructure development around the world, many communities, especially the most vulnerable ones, are being affected by several development projects both from their own government and private sectors. Oxfam published a manual on strengthening community understanding of free, prior, and informed consent to assist NGOs, CBOs, and community educators in the hope that communities will participate more in decision-making process.

You might feel nervous when needing to conduct interviews with your rightsholders and stakeholders when doing a project. These are some qualitative interview tips from Maestro that will help you become a good interviewer. Be prepared for your next interview!

This useful Toolkit for holding consultations with refugee youth was put together by Women’s Refugee Commission, UNHCR, and the Greater Ridgewood Youth Council providing a framework to allow organizations to meaningfully consult youth as well as reinforce the understanding of young people in identifying their challenges and situations they encounter.

Civil Society Research Outputs

Amidst COVID-19, government repression comes in many forms including denial of artistic freedom, which is considered a human rights violation. Participants throughout Asia, especially Southeast Asia, provided their perspectives on their struggles to speak out in this publication produced by Artists at Risk Connection, Mekong Cultural Hub, and FORUM-ASIA. The report highlights key findings and gives recommendations to human rights organizations and civil society organizations to protect the rights of artists.

Even though there is a high rate of migrant movement in Southeast Asia and migrants are recognized as beneficial to their destination countries, they are still left out from the financial and aid systems. The report has been put together by Migrant Forum in Asia, presenting cases received from grassroots-level workers and highlights issues of wage theft faced by these migrants.

Asia Democracy Network published this report to advocate for media space advancement by mapping out the severe threats faced by organizations in Southeast Asia. The consultations were conducted with stakeholders in five countries to find recommendations to address these challenges appropriately.
