JUNE - JULY 2021

If we look at the world over the past 2 months, the case for climate adaptation has never been stronger. We’re seeing typhoons in China force over 100,000 people to evacuate. We’re seeing wildfires in Canada wipe whole villages off the map. We’re seeing a tsunami of debris and destruction in Germany and Belgium as communities attempt to clean up after unprecedented megafloods.

Even if humanity were to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions today, climate disasters like these will still be happening. The call has never been louder. It’s time to increase our preparedness for climate impacts. It's time to adapt.

Report: Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Cities: the Power of Nature-based Solutions  - This report, produced by UNEP in close collaboration with the Italian Presidency of the G20, investigates the potential of nature-based solutions (NbS) to build smart, sustainable and resilient cities, drawing from more than a decade of research and experience from G20 countries and beyond. The goal of the report is to inspire action to enhance NbS in cities to reduce climate vulnerability.
Report: A Practical Guide to Climate-resilient Buildings & Communities – UNEP published a brand new Practical Guide to demonstrate how buildings and community spaces can be constructed to increase their resilience to climate change, especially in developing countries where structures are largely self-built. Watch the animation video to learn more! And read our new story here: 5 Ways To Make Buildings Climate Change Resilient.
Video Launch of the UN Climate Change & Universities Partnership - A video has been launched with stories from partners to promote the UN Climate Change and Universities Partnership Programme. Check out the video to learn how graduate students are working closely with local, national and regional partners to undertake a research project as a part of their master's theses. Watch the video and read more about the partnership programme here.
Report: Coastal Adaptation & Nature-based Solutions for the Implementation of NAPs – This new publication from UN Climate Change provides guidance to developing countries on accessing finance for the implementation of coastal and marine nature-based solutions to increase resilience to extreme climatic events. An important source of grants and concessional finance is the Green Climate Fund, especially for coastal and marine nature-based solutions.
Friends of EbA Members’ Meeting - The Friends of EbA (FEBA) network held its 10th Members’ Meeting in June. This event allowed for members to provide updates on the many activities completed in 2021 thus far, and to set priorities for the upcoming year. View the complete documentation here. FEBA also recently held its EbA Knowledge Day, and you now can find the recordings on the EbA CoP YouTube Channel.
Report: Food Systems at Risk: Transformative Adaptation for Long-Term Food Security - World Resources Institute recently launched a new report examining the ways climate change threatens global food systems and how transformative adaptation for agriculture can enhance food security for millions of small-scale farmers. WRI hosted a webinar and published an article and a podcast to launch the report.
Global EbA Fund Updates – Are you working in ecosystem-based adaptation? If so, our survey to collect your experiences has been extended to 31st October, so you still have time to share your work, lessons, achievements, and more! The Global EbA Fund is accepting applications to support scaling up ecosystem-based adaptation across the world. The second cycle of applications is now open, with a cut-off date of 15 September 2021. See here for details on how to apply.
Report: Toward Gender-responsive Ecosystem-based Adaptation: Why it’s needed and how to get there - The purpose of this report is twofold: to illustrate the importance of integrating gender considerations in EbA actions and to provide concrete examples of how this can be done in practice. To mark the occasion, UNEP is looking back at a story from July 2020 about how one community in Tanzania is reversing years of damage to a vital tropical ecosystem: mangroves.
Challenges of Scaling Up and Financing Ecosystem-Based Adaptation in Africa: The Role of Innovation - Financing mechanisms are needed to mainstream ecosystem-based adaptation to reach climate-vulnerable communities in Africa. A recent session at the 15th Community-based Adaptation Conference, hosted by the Global Resilience PartnershipUNEP, GAN, IUCN and the Friends of EbA network, explored this theme. The post-event blog is available here.
