VOX Update Issue No 329

ANDYSMANCLUB. (For Contact Groups)
Facilitate and run 55 peer to peer suicide prevention support groups across the UK on a Monday evening 7pm except bank holidays, for any man over the age of 18. We are a non-professional peer support group that offers men a safe, non-judgemental, confidential space to come together to chat about things they would like to get off their chest with likeminded men. We currently have a support group in Glasgow at: Scotstoun Sports Campus, 72 Danes Drive, Glasgow G14 9HD. We are hoping to have a chat to discuss with you potentially signposting any men over 18 to us that may benefit from attending a session. Is this something you would be interested in helping us with at all? We would also promote your service should it benefit any members. Any questions at all please let me know,  you can find a little bit more about us by visiting www.andysmanclub.co.uk

Fast track – application guidance for organisations
Connecting Scotland is a Scottish Government programme set up to tackle digital exclusion during the coronavirus crisis. It is delivered with the support of local councils, SCVO and a wide range of organisations from across Scotland and the UK. Previous application rounds have targeted those at high clinical risk from coronavirus, families with children, young care leavers, older people and disabled people. They are now inviting ‘fast track’ applications from organisations working with people at risk of social isolation and loneliness. If you apply through this process you are committing to distribute devices and provide basic monitoring information within 14 days of receipt. This means you should already know who you plan to support prior to applying. You have until 5pm on Friday 6 August to apply. More info about this here.

Stigma Stories (Edinburgh Readers)
Advocard has a new project called Stigma Stories.
The aim of the project is to collect stories from people about the stigma they may have experienced due to their alcohol and /or drug use and the impact this has had on them. We want to hear from people with lived/living experience, loved ones and the professionals that support these people.

● Have you experienced Stigma and discrimination due to your alcohol or drug use ?
● Have you experienced stigma and discrimination because you support a loved one who has alcohol and/or drug issues or because you work in the services that support people with alcohol and/or drug issues?
● Do you want to use your experience to educate people to understand the impact being stigmatised can have?
● Has Stigma prevented you from accessing services/support ?
● Do you have a story to tell about this experience?

We want to use the stories to make a book which we hope will educate others and change their attitudes towards people that have alcohol and/or drug issues. If you have experienced Stigma and want to share your stories with us we can support you to do this. All stories can be anonymised.

Before it’s a Crisis
Here is a list of numbers you can phone for support when most services are closed. It is a good idea to keep these numbers where you can find them when you need support or help. Services such as Breathing Space and the Samaritans offer a listening service. Social Work and the NHS are more appropriate if you need more than this. Some services may not be available during the current pandemic.
