Summer reading goes hand in hand with lazy pool days and yummy BBQs. We love curling up with a good book, don't you? We are excited to bring you our curated list of amazing STEM books, some are new and some are old favorites of ours. From finding out all about space and the universe to discovering the world of ants and bees, we have a multitude of STEM subjects to cozy up with. Relax with some paper engineering and discover some STEM art. We've also included our favorite sticker and activity books, perfect for long road trips and summer vacation travel! Don't miss Diana's Pack with Me video on what she packs for long road trips.

Diana's preschooler is enjoying Anthill by Petra Bartikova and Magdelena Takova. This large-format board book has amazing layered thick pages that showcase the underground world of ants.

For young bird lovers, The Magnificent Book of Birds by Tom Jackson is a great book that features 36 birds with large scale illustrations and key facts and data for each species of birds. WATCH VIDEO 

Similarly for horse lovers, The Magnificent Book of Horses by Tom Jackson and Diana Ferguson brings you 36 different kinds of horses from Thoroghbreds to Shetland Ponies. We especially love the large, detailed illustrations. WATCH VIDEO 

Ekaterina Lukasheva's origami books are some of our favorites for paper geometry. She shows how to make beautiful Japanese Kusudama, paper models featuring pyramidal shapes that are easy to assemble with no glue. WATCH VIDEO

The Optical Illusions Activity Book by Sam Taplin lets kids use stickers as well as pens to make their own working optical illusions. WATCH VIDEO
Diana reviews some of her favorite activity books

Jon Larson collects and photographs micormeteorites (space rocks) in his book, In Search of Stardust: Micrometeorites and Their Terrestrial Imposters. Larson shows you how to find and collect them too!

 


Puzzles are a great way to activiate kids' brains! Star Wars Mazes by Sean C. Jackson features mazes that are complex and challenging. We love the added fun of finding people, droids, and items.  WATCH VIDEO 

If engineering is up your alley, Unconventional Vehicles by Michael Hearst is the perfect book for future builders. Featuring detailed illustrations, the book covers airplanes, rockets, cars, trains and more.

Artist Lisa Congdon infuses her colorful and modern illustration style to her new book, The Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Elements. The book explains each element with detail and illustrations. We love the large pull-out flap of the entire periodic table. WATCH VIDEO
Natalie reviews new STEM-related books from Chronicle Books

This new book series answers kids many questions! Big Questions for Little People: Animals by Claire Philip covers all kinds of animals from land to the sea. The photographs show all the animals in their native habitat with lots offun facts! WATCH VIDEO

With so much activity happening in space these days,  Claire Philip's, Big Questions for Little People: Space is not to be missed. Kids will get the answers to questions on things such as the Big Bang Theory, Saturn's rings, planets and more!  WATCH VIDEO

Middle grade readers will love the STEM-infused novel, The Science of Breakable Things by Tae Keller. Main character Natalie is encouraged by her science teacher to enter the egg drop contest. The novel is infused with fun drawings and the inspirational story will keep readers engaged. WATCH VIDEO 

The Renegade Spy Project is the first book in the Renegade Girls Tinkering Club Adventures by Terri Selting David. A group of diverse girls are set to invent and sell spy products to help pay for their busted microscope, while solving a school mystery. The book also features lots of DIY projects. WATCH VIDEO

Next in the series by Terri Selting David is Renegade Style (Book 2). The story centers on the adventures of Amber Rosenberg who loves to sew and make her own fashions. Fashion technology is at the forefront along with lots of DIY projects to make, including a sewn circuit bracelet.  (Book 3 is out too!)  WATCH VIDEO
Interview with STEM Author Terri Selting David

Learn about the different parts of a flower in Paper Flower Art by Jessie Chui. With her techniques, you're able to make crepe paper flowers look more realistic.

For the dino-loving kid, Build Your Own Dinosaurs Sticker Book by Simon Tughope brings you all the dinosaur skeletons!  Kids can cover the skeletons with the all the right stickers for the body parts until they complete that particular dinosaur. 

The Eyelike Stickers Series from Workman Publishing features gorgeous, photographic stickers that help toddlers develop finger dexterity. Kds will learn about the ocean, dinosaurs, horses, bugs, space, and more.

Diana packs for a Screen-Free 14 Hour Road Trip with Kids

Photographer Phyllis Ma creates fantastical scenes with real mushrooms in her Mushroom and Friends zine series, which inspired us to explore what's in our backyard (and our refrigerator).  Watch our pocket microscope mushroom adventures on YouTube

The Ocean: The Ultimate Handbook of Nautical Knowledge by Chris Dixon and Jeremy K. Spencer is a hands-on guide from tidepools to learning about sea creatures. We love the maritime life skills (tying knots) and how to read weather patterns. 
 
Beehive by Petra Bartikova and Martin Sojdr shows life in the hive for bees. The board book features colorful illustrations and thick cut-out pages that layer over each other, making it a fun experience for young, curious minds.
