Bus Crash Kills Over 30
Over the weekend, a collision between a fuel truck and a crowded bus in the Democratic Republic of Congo killed 33 people. The fire occurred near Kibuba along National Route One between Kinshasa and Kikwit, around 110 miles (180 km) from the capital Kinshasa. Deadly road crashes are frequent in the Democratic Republic of Congo, given the combination of old vehicles and poorly maintained roadways.

Belarus
Olympic Sprinter Granted Asylum
Belarusian sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya was granted a humanitarian visa in Poland Monday after refusing orders from Belarusian sports authorities to return home from the Tokyo Olympics. The Olympic sprinter was told that she had to go back to Belarus after criticizing her coaches. Tsimanouskaya sought refuge in the Polish embassy in Tokyo, where she was granted a humanitarian visa. She is due to arrive in Poland on Wednesday. Meanwhile, her husband, Arseni Zhdanevich, fled Belarus for Ukraine, deciding to leave after his wife was ordered to return home. Tsimanouskaya’s refusal to return to Belarus comes at a time when Belarusian leader, Alexander Lukashenka, has been cracking down on opposition, most notably when a plane was diverted earlier this year to Belarus to detain a journalist.

This map depicts where the Belarusian sprinter and her husband have sought refuge since her refusal to return to Belarus. Click on the map to learn more.

China & India
Pangong Lake Border Agreement

India and China on Monday announced they would disengage their troops from the Pangong Lake region along their border between India's Ladakh region and China's Aksai Chin region. No specifics were announced, only that they would disengage in the near future. The Pangong Lake region is one of a handful of disputed border areas between India and China. China controls two-thirds of the lake region and India the rest. Military troops have been stationed in the region due to both nations claiming disputed land. The talks on Monday are a step forward towards resolving the dispute.
