Service Provider Grants to help Working Lands Businesses

The Working Lands Enterprise Board is pleased to announce the availability of funds for service provider organizations through the Working Lands Enterprise Initiative Program. Projects eligible for funding include the provision of direct technical assistance and/or indirect services to support the development of Vermont-based working lands businesses.

Service providers, and sub-state regional programs are welcome to apply. Awards will range from $10,000 to $20,000. The application window for this funding opportunity opens August 13th at 12 noon.

The VT Agency of Commerce and Community Development's Economic Recovery Bridge Program is available to assist Vermont businesses, including farms and agriculture related entities, that can still demonstrate a net tax loss in 2020 due to COVID-19. Advisors are available to assist working lands businesses with applying for the program. Grants will be issued on a first come, first served basis.

Open Until Funds Are Exhausted

Interest is growing in using grazing management to rebuild the health of degraded soils. The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) will host a virtual workshop for ag professionals, educators and mentor farmers to provide information and hands-on training on regenerative grazing, soil health, and monitoring. This workshop is free to attend and includes an hour break for lunch. Registration is required.

Event Date: August 24, 11 am - 4 pm 

Join UVM pathologists and entomologists for a field walk workshop to learn about, identify and discuss solutions for pests and diseases impacting crops this year. Workshop leaders will discuss strategies for utilizing integrated pest management (IPM) techniques. The workshop will take place at the certified organic mixed vegetable farm Bear Roots Farm in Williamstown and is geared toward commercial organic vegetable growers. This event is free for BIPOC and commercial vegetable growers. Registration is required.

Are you interested in learning more about how to slaughter and process your own animals? Join Rural VT and professional itinerant slaughterer Mary Lake for this workshop series at Meadows Bee farm in Windham, VT where Mary will take participants through the steps of slaughtering and processing a sheep. The series is offered as two workshops, the first covering slaughter and the second processing. The workshops are offered back-to-back and participants can choose to attend one or both. The cost to attend is $40 per workshop or $70 for the series.
