“When you want to help someone, instead of leting them degrading themselves, you have to help them become what they can be.”

in brief

Milton Parc, between stories...

Last year, Tania Casaubon, artist in residence with us, had gone to this corner of the city to co-create with the indigenous population in a situation of homelessness, hit hard by the pandemic. From this co-creation was born a narrative and embroidered cartography of Milton Parc “Au fil d'histoires”, now available online. In this interactive universe, she invites us to wander the streets to find anecdotes and journeys of people who rub shoulders with the neighborhood on a daily basis.

… and current events

Today, this local community occupying and living in a corner of this Montreal district is pushed further toward the Parc avenue at the end of July, while the owner of  the space vacant at the southeast corner of these streets has added a second fence around its lot. The surrounding organizations working with this group in a situation of homelessness in Montreal are mobilizing to find other spaces in order to address the specific issues experienced by this community.

Memories and public work of art
Here we are, launching a new artistic project this summer as part of Métissage Urbain in collaboration with the artist Raphaëlle de Groot and her team. Mandated for the realization of a permanent work of art with the Centre des mémoires montréalaises (MEM). She wishes to carry "the idea of embodying and representing memory not as a set of contents, but rather as a process of social transformation". The final work will be installed in summer 2022 in front of the window of the MEM performance hall in Montreal. To find out more (in French).

Celebration in Montréal-Nord
The spirit of community was at the rendezvous during the FestiHood organized by Hoodstock, Itinéraire pour tous and Paroles d’ExcluEs. Youth and the less young came together through music shows, popular gatherings and distribution of food. The parade was happily closed by our idAction Mobile caravan, which came to support this initiative.
The faces of Côte-des-Neiges
A Lovely afternoon for this ephemeral photo exhibition displaying 25 portraits of participants of the district's heat stopover. Visited by our teams since last March, the group happily carried this event attracting the curiosity of passerby and providing a friendly atmosphere to end the season with our partners Pastorale sociale, Prévention CDN-NDG and the Caravane Philanthrope. We are looking to disseminate this exhibition in  the neighborhood: let us know if you want to host it!

Museum, objects and memories
Musée de quartiers project were held at PAS de la Rue and Club Ami in July. During these workshops, participants were invited to present an object that was important to them or that could be exhibited in a museum. The conversations brought back memories of everyday objects which, through the passage of time, become museum pieces. These meetings are also an opportunity to discuss social issues. Learn more in our Facebook page.

Histoires exquises
Do you remember this collective literary game of stories written in relay? Several composed stories have already been posted on the Facebook page and the blog. Now, let yourself be transported by the public reading recorded in the month of May and available in this link (mostly in French). Enjoy!
Festival in Côte-des-Neiges
We are participating in the organization of an event scheduled for Wednesday, September 1st, at Kent Park with the CCI of the Development Corporation community of Côte-des-Neiges (DCC of CDN) and the Maison de la culture du quartier, a festival is organized with activities on the theme of urban security and the fight against racism. Several activities are planned with, as the centerpiece, a collective work guided by an artist. More information to come on our social networks.

Nutashkuan: happy"Together, Mamu"
Camp and animation training with the New Pathways Foundation took place in Nutashkuan in mid-July. Going from theoretical to practical, about twenty young people participated in activities and reflections, up to the creation of logos that represent their community. At the same time, some participants have completed the apprentice facilitator training which will allow them to join the camp in  the coming years, but within the animation and mediation team itself.

In Wemotaci
The accompaniment of the Youth Council of Wemotaci began. The young people of the Board really appreciated the both playful and productive nature of the meeting. Links were re-established with a community worker who works to make the food of the community self-sufficient and to   provide a space for creative expression open to all. Our team will support the Youth Council from a distance and in attendance with a few short stays.

Séjour à Nutashkuan
by Alessia De Salis and Jose Fuca, médiators

“Au travers nos activités, les jeunes se sont déguisé.e.s, dépassé.e.s, entraidé.e.s. Liette, collaboratrice principale sur le terrain à  Nustashkuan, a parlé de fierté culturelle et de l'histoire des pensionnats. Chaque enfant compte.”

Entrevue avec Valérie, médiatrice : rencontres, expériences et bienveillance
by Maude Blanchet Léger

“Les ateliers de pensée design c’est d’utiliser des objets ou la création pour faire une sorte de modelage de ton idée. Tu fais une sorte de mini maquette et après ça tu l’expliques. C’est pas le résultat visuel de ton organisation qui est important, c’est plutôt la signification que t’as mise à l’intérieur de ce que t’as créé."

Nouveaux arrivants en deux versions
by Gilles Lamarche

"Je les admire et je les comprends les nouveaux arrivants car l’adaptation n’est pas toujours évidente. Ils doivent laisser derrière eux parents et amis et rebâtir leurs valeurs sans offusquer les nôtres dans une nouvelle vie qui leur est presque inconnue. Bravo pour leur courage !"
