Facilities Division Safety Training Plan
Safety training is one of the key components to the Facilities Division Safety Program. It helps each of us to recognize safety hazards and correct them before a mishap can occur. Power Systems come together each week to spend an hour talking about one subject - safety training. Tate Boulware, Power Systems Engineer, is helping lead a required training on the subject of Hazard Communication. Required safety training topics can be found for your area in the Facilities Division Safety Training Plan.
Coin For Exceptional Service
Mike Jones joined Power Systems Shop in March 2020 and has excelled in a lead position. Mike brought many changes to the shop, with his top priority being safety. Mike is an expert splicer and is training the Power System shop on proper methods to splice high-voltage cable. Mike is the switching leader in the shop and has improved methods to minimize interruptions to campus power. He gives a safety briefing before each switching procedure and he now makes color-coded copies of the switching orders for each switching crew. The crews can easily tell which step they are assigned. Lastly, after the Centennial substation fire, Mike recommended checking all substations with our infrared camera. The day after the fire, he found a "hot spot" on the new substation transformer that was installed last year. This discovery and subsequent repairs may have prevented another outage. Congratulations, Mike, on your Facilities Coin for exceptional service!
Ambitious Lab Renovation Completed
Two ambitious projects were completed before deadline and under budget, despite obstacles during both design and construction phases. Angkana Bode with CPM, Liz Moore with OUA, and Jeff Luz with Facility Services teamed with BHDP and Optima Engineers to complete the projects. The renovation of existing campus labs in Partners II and III supports both wet lab and computational data analytic space to meet the critical space requirements of the new CRISPR Lab. So, what is CRISPR? Watch a video with faculty member Rodolphe Barrangou describe his discovery that CRISPR functions as an immune system to protect bacteria against viral infection.
Training Stewardship Across Campus
Lani St. Hill, with Waste Reduction & Recycling, gave an informative and engaging training to the kitchen staff at On the Oval. This was the first day back to work for many of the kitchen staff and they learned how to properly sort their landfill, recycling, and compostable waste to maximize diversion. The staff left the training empowered to lead and share their sorting skills with others.
