Join the author, Jennifer Joseph for the book launch of "Lady Under the Stairs" on Thursday, August 5, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm on 4303 Church Avenue (between Troy Avenue and 43rd Street), Brooklyn New York.
 
Joseph recounts the tale of the Charles family, household servants on the McKenzie family plantation. After a brief encounter with a member of the McKenzie clan, the teenage Lilianne Charles spends the next twenty-five years of her life in a mental institution. The book subsequently follows the two families’ interconnected history through centuries of slavery, and the Charles’ post-captivity lives in the Caribbean.
 
Joseph says she strongly relates to her characters. With a background comprising over twenty-five years’ experience in the field of social work, she points out that while “Lady Under the Stairs” is a work of fiction, the story highlights “the unnecessary confinement of people living with mental illnesses to institutions and other facilities.” Joseph adds that besides being viewed as a literary experience, it can also serve as an advocacy tool.
 
At the event, Joseph will speak briefly about her book, and about her journey as an author. Signed copies of “Lady Under the Stairs” will be available for sale to attendees at $20.00 apiece.
 
Caribbean nationals in the New York City area are encouraged to attend this event and show their support for the region’s vibrant artistic community.
