Keep strong and stay safe
Rick Paget, MNC Coordinator
Welcome to the August edition of MNC’s newsletter.  Faced with another round of COVID-19 lockdowns, keep in mind those who are alone or who are experiencing challenges during these restrictive times. Taking time to phone and show you care, may positively impact someone – more than you realise.  It may even save a life!
If you’re experiencing hardship, Emergency Relief is still available at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, weekdays from 10am-12pm.  This is accessed by phoning 5499 9345, with collection being made out front of the MNC.  Unfortunately, the Centre will remain closed during periods of lockdown.
We’re anticipating further restrictions this month, so please follow our Facebook page for updates relating to opening hours and future changes relating to various planned activities and events.
Keep strong, stay safe, and look out for each other Maleny.
Please note: Whether the following events go ahead will depend on any further directives from Queensland Health regarding lockdowns.
If you’re interested in the housing situation, or are experiencing housing crisis, homelessness or risk of homelessness, this is an ideal opportunity to speak with various housing support services, such as: Kyabra-KEIHS Program, Carers QLD, Coast2Bay Housing Group, Services Australia, ABS, Rent Connect, Act for Kids, Qstars, Josie Coco – Counsellor/Life Coach, and Speak Up Now Stop Domestic Violence.
Plus, meet local housing groups Polkadot Community Inc (with Tiny House on display), Smart Living Society, Glass Housing 55’s – Better Together, Maleny Eco Village, Maleny Community House (formerly Men’s House), and Maleny Women’s House.
Other activities: Aunty Beverly Hand will open with an Acknowledgement to Country. Jimmy Hirst and his team will have a Tiny Home on display, and social action theatre troupe Rehearsal for Real Life will entertain and educate us with participative theatre.
We’d love you to join us for a BBQ lunch at 12.30pm (optional donation). You may also like to bring items to the Fixit Café, where the team can fix tools, sharpen knives, repair your bike, and make sewing alterations the same day.

'Dying to Know Day' (postponed)
The Heart Space Grief Garden in Bicentenary Lane – 'Feel the serenity'
Dying to Know Day was to be held on Sunday 8 August at the Heart Space Grief Garden adjacent to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, meeting at the Flexi-School behind the Centre before moving across to the  Garden. Unfortunately with the current lockdown in place, the event has had to be postponed.
Dying to Know Day is held annually on 8 August, and is devoted equally to the living and the dead. We are not only encouraged to consider our own passing from life but also the already-completed passing of our friends and family members. In addition to end-of-life planning, D2KD is also about grief, bereavement, and coping with loss. Every year in August, people across the world are allowed to ask questions, have conversations, express feelings, and make plans.
In Maleny it's a beautiful morning of reflection and ceremony shared with local artists, poets, musicians and presenters. And although we can't celebrate on the day this year, hopefully we'll be able to reschedule a morning at the Grief Garden at a later date.
Radically Real Conversations
Wednesday 1 September, 10am
Radically Real Conversations is a facilitated programme of topics raised by group members that are relevant to them in the present.
Learn and practice evidence-based relational skills that build connected relationships. Connected relationships naturally support the process of healing ourselves and others, as they form the basis for inclusion; the ability to be with the different in all its forms.
For more information click here, or phone Josie 0498 065 306.

Call for Management Committee members
Ian Demack, President
With the MNC Annual General Meeting coming up, some MNC Committee members will be stepping down, which means we’re looking for new members to help carry on its essential work.
THE COMMITTEE'S ROLE: The Management Committee provides governance and strategic oversight for the MNC. Committee members also undertake different projects to help the MNC meet its obligations to the community, and to our funding partners.
TREASURER: Our Treasurer, Frances Harper, will be leaving the Committee after providing sterling service in this challenging and important role. So if you have accounting skills and a desire to work with a progressive community-based organisation, now is your chance!

We’re also looking for people with the following experience or personal qualities:
  • A commitment to working with and serving our local community
  • Previous experience with not-for-profit organisations, including strategic planning
  • The ability to build good relationships with government agencies and our political representatives
  • IT and social media skills
  • Grant writing and contract management skills
  • Fundraising skills
  • Legal, business management or HR skills
Meetings are held at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, at 4.00 pm on the fourth Thursday of each month.
If you’re interested in a voluntary position on our Committee, and would like more information, please contact our President, Ian Demack, on 0421 339 416.
Now recruiting:
Ageing health study
The University of the Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council are partnering on an exciting new study about healthy ageing, and we are RECRUITING NOW!
Participation in this study will be greatly beneficial in determining the effectiveness of the Healthy Sunshine Coast program, as well as allowing us to improve the overall health of older adults on the Sunshine Coast.
The research is for all people over the age of 65, whether currently participating in the Healthy Sunshine Coast program or not. Participants need to be residing within the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area, generally healthy and able to exercise at a low intensity safely, and able to commit to three health and fitness assessments over six months.

BACK ON SALE!

WHO WE ARE: Out and Proud in Maleny
Rosetta’s Books in Maleny has new stock of this collection of six stories of local LGBTIQ people for sale. This project was created by Heather Cameron and describes how ‘they share their thoughts, their feelings, and their hopes... [and] in doing so, show great courage and great commitment to make it easier for young people to be accepted for who they are.’  With striking portraits by local artist Bill Dowsett, the book is a colourful tribute.
BONUS: Carol Low, the book’s story facilitator and editor, invites local community workers, educators or health professionals who work with LGBTIQ people to claim their FREE copy.  Email her on carol.lowoz@gmail.com
This project has come out of the Maleny IDAHOBIT group. You can find them on Facebook.
Thanks to our donors for their contributions
As a quick update, we’d like to express our gratitude and thanks to the many donors who have contributed to the Maleny Women’s House – in particular the Maleny Masonic Lodge for their ‘Hand, Heart, Pocket’ grant, Zonta Club of Blackall Range, Church On The Rise, Fiona Dempster, Maleny Additions and of course Flaunt Maleny and Cappriccios who got the funding ball rolling earlier this year!
A special mention also goes to the APEX Club of Maleny who for a number of years have helped maintain the Women's House grounds.
Katherine Miller continues to case-manage clients, both those enquiring about the Women’s House and those living there. Housing prices, rental affordability, pressures on mental health, and resulting domestic violence continue to escalate the housing and homelessness issue. The solution is not a simple one – however looking out for each other and coming together with a unified approach is a step in the right direction.
We look forward to seeing you at the Housing & Homelessness Roadshow!
