The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) has just issued a toolkit to help judges support probation transformation: The Role of the Judge in Transforming Juvenile Probation: A Toolkit for Leadership. Check it out here or learn more about the publication here.
 

Research

This article from the National Institute of Justice looks at the relationship between childhood trauma and youth justice system involvement and provides a summary of findings from seven recent studies.

Also, check out the latest detention population data for Maine, provided by the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) network.
Finally, the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the National Center for Education Statistics have released the Report on Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2020. This annual report provides the most recent data on school crime and student safety from national surveys of students, teachers, principals, and post-secondary institutions.

Practice

You(th) Matter, a Boston-based youth initiative created to connect and elevate youth voices in discussions about police and criminal justice reform, is launching their second annual Youth Voices Contest for young people nationwide. Youth ages 14-18 are invited to submit writing, artwork, or a short film in response to this year’s prompt: What is the role of policing in fostering democracy “by the people, for the people”?

Additionally, Maine will have a statewide SRO summit on August 10th and 11th. Participation is free and registration is available for both in person and virtual options. Click here to register.

 

R E G I O N A L    C A R E    T E A M S

Two regional care teams met in July.

Region 1: Case reviews for two youth with requests for mentoring and pro-social support, housing stability, and basic needs (clothing and shoes).
Region 2: No regular meeting, but held a Kennebec County focused discussion and information sharing session.
Region 3: Follow up emergency funding provided to assist with housing and transition needs for a prior month's meeting.  There were no new referrals in July.
