Member Highlight
In this section we introduce some of our talented IWP ladies. This month we are talking with Jo Allen.

When Jo Allen was asked to be September’s member highlight she was much in doubt, because she always tries to be in the background. Looking at Jo you wouldn’t believe she is 80 years old.
Jo was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Her mother was a teacher and her father an estate agent and the family moved house frequently. This did not exactly help with her education as she attended six different private schools and with so many moves, her dyslexia was never picked up, Jo found and still finds reading aloud and spelling a problem.
Jo married David an engineering student and had two children and lived in the English countryside. When her husband became a Management Consultant, they sold up and started their nomadic lives moving firstly within the UK and later when the children were older, internationally.
They did manage a ten year stay in Clifton, Bristol where Jo ran “Leather Design”, her own business, making tooled leather belts, handbags and made to measure clothing.
Art and design are Jo’s passion and having formal training in dress design, she can not only make clothes but all home furnishings.
In Namibia Jo was inspired to paint the incredible landscape and had training with a leading South African water colourist.  She exhibited and sold her art.
Always one to keep fit, Jo enjoyed swimming, running and aerobics daily.
Jo did some voluntary work teaching local women how to cut patterns and use the sewing machine to make garments.
Jo has made some exciting train journeys; The South-African Blue train from Pretoria to Cape Town, 42 hours of spectacular scenery, out of the lap of luxury into the heart of poverty.
She travelled through Chile, Bolivia, Arica, La Paz, which is 4,257m across the Andes on a single line with the train stopping to let llamas cross the track! On board the train they served coca tea to help with altitude sickness but they arrived feeling very strange. The carriage had an armed guard and when the train derailed, he just chatted with the locals who appeared from nowhere to offer food.
Her most exclusive journey was on V.S. Oriente Express between Venice, Paris and finishing in London, it was the height of luxury but not nearly so exciting as the journey through South America .
Eating soup on the Portuguese Alfa Pendula, travelling at 180 kph between Lisbon and Porto was good fun too!
Widowed at 58, Jo joined the Hash House Harriers and met the second love of her life, Mark, who is everything Jo is not.  He’s an excellent cook and brilliant speller so they complement each other perfectly.
Jo has psychic powers. She is telepathic and helps people by reading their tarot cards where she can feel their vulnerability and can try and help.

She really likes meeting new people through IWP and some have become lasting friends.

Portuguese Lessons

Several members have expressed an interest in learning Portuguese in a small group format with other IWP members. If you are a Portuguese teacher who would like to offer group lessons to our members (for a fee), or you are a member who would like to take part in lessons (for a fee), please contact Britta Martini-Miles.  She will help to coordinate.  Her email is: vicepresidentiwp@gmail.com

Coffee Mornings

Come on down and join us at the Cascais Market Café each Tuesday morning around 10:30. We have about two dozen of the most fun people who are there to meet and greet. Don't be shy - it's an easy place to start making friends.
