Two for the price of one
The Butcher household is away on holiday next week, and I won't be sending my regular email, so this one covers the next two weeks.
I hope we're learning and growing together as we look at some of the women who lived in the patriarchal world of the Bible over these weeks. I hope we're learning some good stories about people we might not have known well, or at all. I enjoyed delving into the story of the two women in dispute over the baby boy (you can see the talk below, if you missed it) and I'm looking forward to finding out more about Priscilla in a few weeks' time.
But I hope too that we are taking to heart some of what God is showing us about himself and his call on our lives as we explore these stories. Sometimes it seems harder to know what God is saying through a narrative about how people lived, than in a list of instructions. But I think it's worth the effort and time seeking to hear and respond to God as we grow as disciples.
This Sunday morning the focus is on Abigail. She appears in the story of King Saul and David in the Old Testament. Writing about her, Elaine Storkey's title is: Abigail Saves the Day! Read the Bible story in 1 Samuel 25:2-42 to see what Abigail does, and how she is treated by the men around her.
And then next Sunday, 15th August, we'll look at the perhaps better known character of Ruth. Ruth's story can be told as a love story, or as a quest for food, or as a tale of family intrigue, but we'll consider Ruth's relationship with her mother-in-law Naomi, and what we can learn from that. We'll also be hearing the retelling of the story from a new book, Whistlestop Tales - see more below.
Also coming up...
Women's Breakfast - this Saturday morning, 7 August, 8.30-10am, at Star Café. A great chance to catch up with each other over some breakfast, hopefully sitting out in some sunshine!
Connection Point - we're planning to be open every Thursday morning, 10.30-12, through the summer. Some of our regular team will be away at various times, so if you're free and fancy dropping in on any Thursday morning, you're always welcome. It's a great place and space to relax and chat, especially with those who have not had that opportunity for some time.
