Remembering Marks Gate and North Chadwell Heath
Eastside Community Heritage is happy to announce a new oral history project ‘Remembering Marks Gate and North Chadwell Heath’ that aims to collect local people’s stories for an exhibition about their memories of the area.
Marks Gate has a rich history - the name originally referring to the entrance or gate into Hainault Forest located near the medieval manor of ‘Marks’ which stood on what is now Warren Hall Farm.
“My first impression when I got there before I even got into the school and when we arrived and from the bus and walked along the road it was the fresh air; it smelt of the country side and the air seemed so much fresher.”

Black History Month:
East London Black Writers
In order to celebrate black history month, Eastside Community Heritage are looking for black writers from East London to interview and to feature in our exhibition celebrating, the black contribution to literature. For more info please email andrea@ech.org.uk
The Draw Up A Chair website is now live
Throughout April and May Primary Schools in Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge and Newham participated in our Draw Up A Chair project, which was based on the award-winning book, The Boy at the Back of the Class by the author Onjali Q Raúf. Students designed posters that communicated compassion towards refugees, conveyed empathy and stood up to intolerance and hatred.
The website features teacher learning resources, a gallery of the short listed and winning poster competition designs, as well as more information about the project.
The three winning designs all came from Downshall Primary School. Well done to all the participating schools and congratulations to the winners.
