AWAITING HIS RETURN: Behold Israel Conference

(Saturday, August 7, 2021)

Pastor's Corner

Freedom and the Believer

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free,
and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”
( Galatians 5:1 )

It seems that our freedom as Americans has been eroding on an almost daily basis. One corrupt action after another seem to be leading to a weakening of our Constitution, and an oppression of our freedoms of speech, of worship, of assembly, and on and on and on. The one group that is most bothered by all of this is the Christian. We have known the liberty that is in Christ, and we are not prepared to give that freedom up without a fight.

It is easy to justify fighting against this oppression by crying out, “It is for freedom that Christ has set me free!” (NIV) However, we must remember that many Christians today live in countries where they know nothing of freedom of speech, or freedom of assembly, or any of these things. The New Testament was written under an oppressive government that knew nothing of the liberties we enjoy as Americans. Paul did not write that we should oppose the government if it seeks to take away our liberties. Christianity would have probably been a short-lived movement if that was the case.

The liberty Paul was speaking of was a liberty he enjoyed under Roman rule and even in Roman prisons. It is a spiritual liberty that Christ has bought for us that has given us victory over a life of bondage to the law and to the flesh. It is the liberty of living by faith in a risen Savior, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. It is that freedom to enjoy life to its fullest and not fear that I might not be good enough to have eternal life. This is the liberty we have been afforded in Jesus Christ.

I am not saying that there is not a time to stand against a tyrannical government. I believe we are getting closer and closer to that line every day. This is our responsibility as citizens of this great land, and is our obligation as Christians who endeavor to be responsible citizens of the land God has placed us in. But what good would it do to gain the whole world of liberty if you lost your spiritual liberty? Obviously, there is little comparison between the two.

Walk closely with the Lord. Walk in the Spirit. Delight yourself in the incredible liberty you have in Christ, and be careful not to entangle yourself with legalistic rules and behavior that keep you from enjoying the great blessing He has given to us. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Enjoy it, protect it, and share it with others in Jesus’ name.
