Book Recommendation

Mrinal Gokhale aims to help other South Asians navigating mental health journeys in the Western part of the world feel less alone, and to promote education and acceptance of mental health in South Asian communities.

This book shares true stories of Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi immigrants who navigate mental health in the West. Each featured interviewee discusses how destigmatizing mental health became their fight, and how they're bridging the gap of access, education, and acceptance between generations. From topics like identity, culture, socialization, academia, love, loss, and trauma, each unique story unveils a part of the shadow (saaya) of mental health in South Asian diaspora.

Chapter Shoutout

Our new SAMSA chapter at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine kicked off summer with a cultural event at Boulan Park with South Asian food, music, and Bollywood choreography class. The organization fulfilled fun dares, pictured here, for a Instagram Fundraising Board. Proceeds went to a COVID relief fund held by EKAM, a charity for underprivileged children and their mothers in India. We are so proud of them for organizing a great initiative and excited to see what else they come up with!
