Someone Understands from Postcards from Heaven, Claire Cloninger, 1991
Since we have a great high priest, Jesus the Son of God,
who has gone into heaven, let us hold on to the faith we
have. For our high priest is able to understand our
weaknesses. When he lived on earth, he was temped in
every way that we are, but he did not sin. Let us, then feel
very sure that we can come before God’s throne where
there is grace. There we can receive mercy and grace to
help us when we need it. Hebrews 4:14-16
Who can say God’s people are guilty? No one, because
Christ Jesus died, but he was also raised from the dead,
and now he is on God’s right side begging God for us.
Romans 8:34

Hello Friends!
Below is some incredible news about a St Patrick's Church friend. You may remember The Rev. Betsey Monnot who has joined us before. Read up on the latest news about our friend Betsey+!
Dear Friends in Christ,
Congratulations to The Reverend Betsey Monnot upon her election as 10th Bishop of the Diocese of Iowa! Betsey+ has been serving as the priest-in-charge at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church in Rancho Cordova, California, and as director and retreat leader of Called to Abundant Life: Leadership Consulting. She previously served as missioner for leadership development and networking for the Diocese of Northern California and co-rector with her husband, Michael, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Sacramento.
Betsey+ is the first woman to be elected bishop of Iowa since the diocese was formed in 1853. She will be consecrated as bishop by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry on December 18 in Des Moines.
The Diocese of Iowa is gaining a wise and talented priest as their bishop. Our diocese has been blessed by both Betsey and Michael for many years, and we will be sad to lose them. Our sadness, though is tempered by joy in the knowledge that they will have a great adventure ahead, and I know that she will make a great bishop. I look forward to continuing ministry with the Rev. Betsey Monnot. Please join me in congratulating Betsey and her family for this great news! |

Redwood Empire Food Pop-Up Ministry
|
|
|
Below is Elanor Albon's thankful note and a recap of yesterday's Pop-Up Food Ministry at St Patrick's Church front parking lot.
Thank you to our Pop-Food Ministry team for all your hard work & dedication in serving those in our community!
Dear All,
Thank you to Lauri, Susan, Beth, Pam, Larry, Kerin, driver Chris and REFB rep Arturo. 44 households/150 individuals received food this afternoon!
The extra volunteers were needed. That made packing the "Groceries-To-Go" boxes (formerly packed by the CA National Guard at the REFB warehouse) go well. Also, there was more produce, dairy and bread to distribute than July 21. No volunteer was idle!
It is such a joy to work with our St Pat/REFB team. Chris delivers; Arturo gets things organized; we figure out who's doing what; and "woo-lah", everything works! What could be chaos flows like a well-oiled machine! Smiles in the cars and on the distribution line say it all - the Holy Spirit is at work and having a good time!

Toiletries for the Redwood Gospel Mission
|
|
|
Delivery will be made this week!!
|
|
Hello Friends!
Last week Sandy Keith, Ana Lucía Palacios Tercero and Betsy Randolph sorted toiletries for the Redwood Gospel Mission shower program.
41 packets were assembled and they will be delivered this week by Betsy and Rich Randolph! This ministry was started by Mother Karen and Sister Judith. This latest harvest is through the thoughtful Stewardship of St Patrick’s members who collect and share complimentary toiletries when traveling before the pandemic.
If you are traveling in the near future and are able to collect toiletries for this ministry, that would be wonderful! Keep the toiletries at home with you until we are ready to fill bags again!
Looks like we have a lot of travelers wanting to share the delight of a fresh shower and shampoo.

Bobette Watson Celebrates Her 101st Birthday!

Bobette and her Grandbaby!
2021
|
|
You may recall that our own Bobette Watson kicked off the very exclusive, St. Patrick's 100 Club, with her birthday last July 30th when she turned 100. There was a vehicle parade on her block saluting her achievement, not letting Covid dampen festivities.
This year's celebration was not as public, but it was celebrated in fine style with Bobette's family; daughter, Laddie will be with her along with son, Rob, who joined her for the birthday weekend.
Bobette recently noted that she enjoyed a five day visit from family who wanted to introduce her to her brand new grandson which she said was "a very special time for Laddie and me."
Bobette exclaims that "....the years we have shared with the caring people of St Pat’s have been special to the Watson family. We love you all!"

Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity: The Remarkable Insights of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
Sunday, August 15, 2:00 PM
This event is offered on Zoom Only by Dr. Susannah Heschel.
Register for the Zoom link by clicking here.
Dr. Susannah Heschel will join us on Zoom to discuss her father's deep commitment to human rights, his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, and his vision of a Jewish spirituality that combines the inner life with social and political commitment.
Selma: an iconic site in American history and an iconic moment in Jewish history. “I felt my legs were praying.” With those words describing his experience of the Selma march of 1965, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, professor of Jewish ethics and mysticism at the Jewish Theological Seminary, transformed a political march into a moment of profound religiosity.
What shaped Abraham Joshua Heschel, as a scholar, activist, rabbi and human being? Why did he view the Selma march in religious terms? Rabbi Heschel exemplified the very best of Judaism and yet also speaks to people of a range of faiths, all around the world.
This lecture will introduce aspects of Rabbi Heschel’s public and private life as well as some of his key teachings. Read more about Susannah by clicking here.

When someone you love very much dies, the sky falls. And so you walk around under a fallen sky. —Mirabai Starr, Caravan of No Despair
My dear friend Mirabai Starr has suffered many losses in her life, including that of her fourteen-year-old daughter Jenny, which Mirabai writes about with profound vulnerability and wisdom.
There is no map for the landscape of loss, no established itinerary, no cosmic checklist, where each item ticked off gets you closer to success. You cannot succeed in mourning your loved ones. You cannot fail. Nor is grief a malady, like the flu. You will not get over it. You will only come to integrate your loss. . . . The death of a beloved is an amputation. You find a new center of gravity, but the limb does not grow back.
Richard here: Death cannot be dealt with through quick answers, religious platitudes, or a stiff upper lip. Grief is not a process that can be rushed but must be allowed to happen over time and in its own time. Mirabai recounts that the most important step she took was giving herself permission to mourn in the first place:
With reticence at first, and then with mounting courage, I dared to mourn my child. From the very beginning I suspected that something holy was happening and that if I were to push it away, I would regret it for the rest of my life. There was this sense of urgency, as if turning from death meant turning from my child. I wanted to offer Jenny the gift of my commitment to accompany her on her journey away from me, even if to do so simply meant dedicating my heartbeat and my breath to her and paying attention.
And so I showed up.
When a feeling I did not think I could survive would threaten to engulf me, I practiced turning toward it with the arms of my soul outstretched, and then my heart would unclench a little and make space for the pain. Years of contemplative practice had taught me just enough to know better than to believe everything I think—how to shift from regretting the past and fearing the future to abiding with what is. In this case, a totally [messed up] thing. The ultimate [messed up] thing. I sat with that.
I did not engage in this practice to prove something to myself or anyone else. I was not interested in flexing my spiritual muscles. I did it for Jenny. My willingness to stay present through this process was an act of devotion. By leaning into the horror and yielding to the sorrow, by standing in the fire of emptiness and saying yes to the mystery, I was honoring my child and expressing my ongoing love for her. It was not mere mindfulness practice; it was heartfulness practice.
Every individual has their own journey through grief and loss. Mirabai is an example of how we can courageously face and feel our grief in a way that honors the gift of life we have been given.

Story from Our Community:
In March 2019, my 40-year-old daughter passed away suddenly. It felt as though I had been flung over a rocky cliff and fell headlong into a dark abyss of grief. Then came the realization that all attempts at controlling this temporal life are fallacy. Slowly too, came the sense of being held by both death and resurrection, that which is unknowable but still somehow known, and awakened to the eternality of God, whom I call the Present Now of all Love. —Linda C.

COVID Updates from City Connections of Santa Rosa

August 2, 2021
Health officials urge immediate vaccination and issue orders requiring use of face coverings indoors to prevent the spread of COVID-19
Sonoma County and other Bay Area health officers have issued Health Orders requiring all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, to wear face coverings when indoors in public settings, with limited exceptions, starting at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3.
The new Health Orders require wearing a well-fitting mask indoors in public settings, venues, gatherings, and workplaces, such as offices, retail stores, restaurants, bars, theaters, family entertainment centers, conference centers, schools, daycares, and State and local government offices serving the public.
Indoor settings, whether public or private, are higher risk for COVID-19 transmission, especially when you are with people you do not live with. Health officials also recommend that all employers make face coverings available to individuals entering their businesses, and businesses are required to implement the indoor face covering order. "Masks required" entrance signage is available for businesses to print and post by downloading here.
Vaccines remain the most powerful tool in the fight against COVID-19, including the Delta variant. Health officials urge all unvaccinated residents 12 and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
For more information about COVID-19 and local vaccination clinics, visit SoCoEmergency.org/vaccine
