Weekly Update from St Paul's Cathedral Melbourne
Dear Friends,

“Here we go again”, many of the St Paul’s Cathedral colleagues told me when we prepared to leave the building on Thursday with another lockdown only just announced. By now we will all have the drill down pat, no doubt. You’ll know the extent of your five kilometre radius, and the five reasons for leaving home. I hope you will also know to turn on to “Cathedral TV” on Sunday morning at 8am and 10am - on Facebook and Youtube - and to join us for our virtual morning tea at 9am via zoom and our first study in the new discipleship series at 11.15am.

I had the privilege of showing the new Japanese Consul General our wonderful Cathedral in the run up to our annual Hiroshima Day Service. Mr Shimada will join us at 10am via videolink from the residency in Toorak to deliver his peace message. Do join us if you can.

I was delighted that at our Chapter meeting on Tuesday, two new Cathedral canons were appointed. Canon Glenn Loughrey, a Wiradjuri man and parish priest of St Oswald’s, will join us as our First Nations Artist in Residence and Canon Jane has been made Canon Pastor. Warm congratulations to both! We look forward to their rich contributions to our ministry and mission, and our journey with First Nations people.

Please remember that we pray for you daily by name. Please pray for us too, and for all who are faced with complex decisions to make regarding the wellbeing of our nation. Above all, please remember that while we may be locked down, the Word of God is unfettered and so is the power of the Holy Spirit.

With all good wishes,

Dean Andreas and the Cathedral Team.

Introducing our Discipleship Series

With great excitement, our Cathedral is embarking on the theme of “Discipleship” for the next six weeks. This marks the start of encouraging and enabling every member of our Cathedral family to live a life following and imitating Christ and helping others do the same. We warmly invite everyone to come on this journey by joining one of the discipleship groups. The first group will meet this Sunday at 11.15am via Zoom (see details above).

In preparation for these sessions, you may like to read the questions (click here). Please have a copy of the Bible ready for the study as well.

Pray with us

The World
Praise God, with people around the world for the amazing talent and dedication of athletes at the Olympic Games. We hold the people of Afghanistan in our prayers, as the conflict there deteriorates and the question is asked of whether full-scale war might return. In Tigray province of Ethiopia, there are calls for rebels to leave these border regions as violence continues, impacting lives of nationals in so many challenging ways. While COVID infection statistics indicate a reprieve in many badly affected countries, South Korea is suffering a spike as the Delta variant arrives. In Ghana, demonstrations are calling for the President to act and bring relief for people suffering from economic struggles adversely affected by the pandemic. While local people in Myanmar are suffering shortages of hospital beds and oxygen supplies, no solution to significant problems are apparent on either side of the political divide.

Our City and State
We pray for ourselves as our COVID situation has changed so rapidly. Help us to be cheerfully understanding as we change and cancel plans, reminded that our trust in God is paramount as we follow requirements to keep each other safe.

The Anglican Communion
The Church of South India (United: Leader/Moderator: A. Dharmaraj Rasalam). In Nigeria, the Primate has dedicated a new Cathedral of St Andrew, Zonkwa, describing it as a glorious edifice to worship God. He commended the people for their faith in God in the face of persecution, saying that it was a joyous occasion even though lives there are under threat. We thank God and pray for their Bishop Jacob Kwashi and Rhoda, his wife, for strength and courage as they lead the congregation.

The Australian Anglican Church
The Diocese of Bendigo (Bp Matt Brain, Dean Elizabeth Dyke, Clergy & People); Delagates attending the Anglican Church’s Family Violence Next Steps Working Conference this week

The Diocese of Melbourne
Archdeaconry of La Trobe (Gavin Ward); St Paul’s Canterbury (Rachel McDougall).

Our Cathedral
Pray for those preparing our discipleship series of sermons and studies, for the growth of love in Christ in our congregation.

Those in Sickness or Need
Joan and Bill Woodhouse, John Zhong, Emilio, Chris, Robyn & David Forbes, Judy Clift, Andrew, Janet Marsden, John, Henri-Felix Vinson, Sum Vita, Jennie Carolane-Balks, Martin, Rebecca, Eric Young, Cleopas Zhang, Madonna Doherty.

Recently Died
