Highgate Society opposes 'No right turn' rules on Swains Lane

In response to Camden's proposal to make the experimental rules permanent, the Highgate Society has issued a statement setting out its objections (click here to read it) and strongly encourages Highgate residents, cyclists, pedestrians and users of Swains Lane to respond to the consultation at
 https://consultations.wearecamden.org/supporting-communities/swains-lane-safe-and-healthy-street/ . The consultation closes on September 5th.
Townsend Yard appeal passes £2,000

The fundraising to employ a barrister to help fight the ill-conceived development project in Townsend Yard is two-thirds of the way to reaching its target.

Historic Highgate: A guided walk
Saturday 11th September.  2.00 pm to 4.00 pm


Do you know the origin of the name of Highgate? What is the oldest building and what famous people lived (and died) here? Where did the King’s mistress live and what happened to the Highgate ponds? And why should we be known as Highgate Regis? All these and other fascinating facts (and gossip) will be revealed on Ruth Hazeldine’s Historic Walk..

The walk is limited to 20 participants only. The walk will start outside the Highgate Society hall at 10A South Grove N6 6BS, and finish outside The Red Lion and Sun on North Hill, where everyone is invited to join for refreshments. The cost is £7.50 (tea and refreshments not included.) Pre-booking via Eventbrite is essential. Click here.
 
Art in Highgate Homes
Monday 20th September. 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm.
You are invited to a Private Viewing of a collection of modern British art in a Highgate home. This is a wonderful opportunity to see an impressive collection which includes work of artists ranging from Howard Hodgkin, Terry Frost and Frank Bowling, to Josef Herman, Keith Vaughan, Patrick Heron and Kyffin Williams. 
£25 entry to include drinks and canapés. Proceeds to go to the Harrington Scheme and the Highgate Society.

The Highgate Watercolour Group will be showing prints of their watercolours at 10A from 23rd September to 7th October. They will enliven the new noticeboards in the newly refurbished hall and will be on show during Saturday coffee mornings and other events at 10A. The Group’s annual exhibition at Lauderdale House will open for a month on October 20th.

The French Circle has published its 2021/22 programme, with the first meeting scheduled for Wednesday 6th October. To view the full programme click here.

Children’s literacy charity, Bookmark, is bringing its one-to-one reading programmes to primary schools in Haringey and is calling for volunteers to support local children with reading. To learn more about volunteering visit bookmarkreading.org/volunteer.

The Highgate Horticultural Society Autumn Show will be on Saturday 4th September from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm in the United Reform Church on Pond Square N6 6BA. More details here

Pop-up Proms in Waterlow Park: open air music every Sunday at 3.00 pm. More details here.

Natural Aspect: a free concert organised by the Heath & Hampstead Society.. Sunday 5th September 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm. Parliament Hill Bandstand. More details here.
