Health Education England South East delivery plan
Health Education England has set out its plan for the next year to recruit, educate and train the current and future workforce across the South East region.
The delivery plan aligned to the NHS People Plan will ensure that across the region there are the right numbers of staff with the right skills, values and behaviours in the right place. The plan covers tailored support for each of the region’s six ICS and also supports key NHS Long Term Priorities such as growing and upskilling the cancer and diagnostics workforce.

We're looking for an HR Assistant to join our team. The role would suit a graduate with a Maths, English or Business-related degree, and who has a keen interest in pursuing a career in Human Resources.
Alternatively, they may have HR experience of 1+ years, or recently completed an HR related internship. Ideally, the role holder will be working towards, or will have an interest in studying for, a CIPD qualification.

AHSN Network launches Health Innovation Podcast: How a heart attack saved a young mum’s life
In the first episode of the AHSN Network’s new Health Innovation Podcast, a fit and healthy 34-year-old mum discusses how she had a heart attack while pregnant due to a genetic condition.
One of the causes of heart attack and stroke is a genetic condition called familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), which creates an abnormal level of cholesterol in the blood. Ciara Wannop didn’t know she had the condition until she had a heart attack while 26 weeks’ pregnant. She feels lucky to have had an early warning of a potentially life-limiting condition.
In this podcast, Ciara is joined by Dr Youssef Beaini, from the NHS Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC), who is the clinical lead of a national programme to help reduce heart disease.

Screening service to identify youngsters at risk of heart disease
Over the next two years, 30,000 children across England will be assessed using a heel prick blood test to identify if they have a ‘faulty gene’ which causes familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), during their child’s routine immunisation appointment.
The Child-Parent Screening Pilot Programme, funded by NHS England and Improvement and delivered by the AHSN Network, will involve a number of GP practices across seven areas in England over the next two years.

AHSN Network welcomes government's 'Life Sciences Vision'
The UK Government recently published its Life Sciences Vision, which sets a 10-year strategy for the sector to solve some of the biggest healthcare challenges of our generation, including cancer, dementia and using innovation to help build out of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
As the innovation arm of the NHS in England, and the link between life science industry and the NHS, the AHSN Network is pleased to see the role of innovation in health and care marked.

Health Education England global health surveys
Health Education England is running two surveys asking for feedback to help it better develop its offer for NHS employees and improve the accessibility of global health training, skills and opportunities.
One survey is for NHS staff and students studying a health-related subject and the second is for organisational representatives.
The surveys focus on ‘global health activities’, meaning the participation in, provision or support of any training, events or placements that promote understanding of global health issues and encourage reciprocal learning and understanding between the NHS and partners overseas. For current or prospective NHS staff, this can take many forms, such as placements, attendance of seminars or lectures, buddying schemes or partnership programmes.
Taking part will ensure that HEE can best support and drive forward opportunities for global learning and initiatives in the future.

The challenges in implementing digital change
A new report from the National Audit Office sets out the lessons for the centre of government and departments to learn from the experience of implementing digital change. It sets out these lessons in six categories, which are essential to get right at the outset:
- understanding aims, ambition and risk;
- engaging commercial partners;
- legacy systems and data;
- capability;
- delivery methods; and
- funding mechanisms.
In pulling together these lessons, the NAO has reviewed previously published reports and interviewed senior digital leaders across government and the private sector. This report assesses good practice, following consultation with experts from industry, academia and think tanks to highlight the nature of the challenges and understand why government has found it hard to apply the lessons of experience.

Business planning for healthcare innovators
Along with a product or service which benefits health and social care, innovators need to ensure there's a sustainable business behind it. This ensures growth for the company and provides the health and care system with the certainty it needs when designing and commissioning care for patients and citizens.
But business planning often gets set aside as engaging with clinicians and commissioners, product development and securing funding takes over.
The KSS AHSN industry team is offering this bite sized workshop to support innovators and SMEs with their thinking around their long-term strategy and business planning. The focus will be on helping participants to plan their commercial offering alongside the growth of the business, putting their vision and sustainability at the heart of their planning.
We will keep the number of places at the workshop low to allow for participant interaction and to help each company. Whilst this is open to all companies, those with less of a background in business may find it most useful. The workshop takes place on 15 September from 10am to 11.30am.

DigitalHealth.London Accelerator applications open!
Digital products and services have provided vital innovation, support and capacity to the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue to do so as the healthcare system moves forward into the subsequent recovery phase of the COVID-19 response.
DigitalHealth.London has opened applications to their flagship Accelerator programme for the next generation of digital health companies to transform health and care.
The programme is for digital health companies with a product or service that has high potential to meet the challenges facing the NHS and social care today, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and as detailed in the NHS Long Term Plan. It works with up to 20 SMEs over a 12-month period, giving bespoke support and advice, a programme of expert-led workshops and events and brokering meaningful connections between innovators and NHS organisations with specific challenges.

SBRI Healthcare new competitions
The Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) Healthcare has launched two new competitions to support the development of innovative products and services that address unmet health needs. The competition titles are 'Stroke and Technology' and 'Delivering a Net Zero NHS'.
Successful innovations will receive up to £100,000 (inc. VAT) to demonstrate the technical feasibility of the concept. The deadline for applications is 24 August.

COVID and quality of life for those with dementia
The Living well with Dementia team at ARC KSS is pleased to share key findings and messages for two studies that explored the impact of COVID 19 on the Quality of life of people with dementia and their carers during 2020. These findings provide insights into the challenges people faced, and factors that supported their wellbeing, with messages that last beyond COVID 19.
The findings will be of interest to everyone involved in supporting people with dementia, including health and social care commissioners; services providing care to people with dementia, including care homes; the voluntary and community sector; people living with dementia and their carers; general practitioners and people working as social prescribers or in dementia support roles. A more detailed publication will follow in the next few months.

Research Fellow vacancy
The Research Design Service South East (RDS SE), a leading provider of PPI/E advice to health and social care researchers in the South East Coastal region which includes Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS), is looking for a new Strategic Lead and Research Adviser in Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPI/E).
The post holder will develop the high profile RDS SE has in this field and work in line with National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) strategic plans, but also work closely with stakeholders in the region (Clinical Research Network KSS, Applied Research Collaboration KSS and above all our clients located in NHS Trusts, primary care, social care, public health and HEIs).

The NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS) has launched its second round of Individual Development Awards (IDAs), to help support individuals to build their research careers across the region.
All Awards need to closely align with one or more of the ARC KSS research themes and will be allocated to applicants that can demonstrate a clear path in their career development, as well as evidence of how this award will help them towards their research goals.
In return, ARC KSS will provide a bespoke programme of support to successful applicants, including academic and/ or a health or social care professional mentor.
