CUEL Network Improvement Community (NIC) News!

As many of you may know, during 2020-2021 CUEL hosted a quarterly virtual convening for current students and program graduates that we called the CUEL NIC.  Each session included a large group discussion led by NIC co-facilitators (all program graduates): Dr. Patti Brekke, Dr. Laquita Louie, Dr. Paul Riskus, and Dr. Allison Tingwall. I would like to publicly thank our four co-facilitators for truly meaningful contributions to our inaugural NIC!  I really enjoyed collaborating with this powerhouse team, and I learned quite a bit along the way. At this time, I would also like to point to resources that were shared during each of these NICs that are accessible at any point in time to each of you. There are two sets of resources that are likely to be of high value for your work this fall.  One set includes anti-racism and anti-racist leadership resources and the other set of resources is for accelerating (rather than remediating) learning following remote learning. To access these resources,  please go to the CUEL website at https://urbanedleadership.org. Once you are at our homepage, click on the link on the far left for CUEL School Leader NIC and you will see the listing of resources. At this time, I am considering whether we continue this NIC for the upcoming year.  If you are interested in participating in this NIC for the upcoming year, please send an email to Martha Hebert (mhebert@uic.edu) to let her know your interests. Also please share with her topics that would be of high interest/value to you for NIC areas of focus. Lastly, the Finnegan Family Foundation has been a longtime supporter of the CUEL and their financial support made our NIC possible. A big shout out to our friends at FFF for their support of our work.

UIC'sCenter for Urban Education Leadership (CUEL) engages in research, development, dissemination, and policy advocacy to disrupt the systemic inequality that affects the lives of Pk-12 urban students and to improve the education outcomes and life opportunities of PK-12 urban students locally and throughout the world.   The CUEL is closely affiliated with COE's nationally recognized Department of Educational Policy Studies.

Upcoming EdD Information Sessions
"The strength of our program lies in its diversity, and if we are going to achieve our goals, we must strive to ensure our leadership reflects the diversity of the students we serve." Counting all 652 CPS schools, including charters, options and specialty schools, UIC has 64 principals; almost exactly 1 in 11. In addition UIC has 51 assistant principals in CPS, most of which are NOT in schools where we have principals. In total, approximately 91 CPS schools, or 1 in 7, have either a UIC principal, or assistant principal. We need talented, dedicated leaders.   PROUD TO BE UIC

Our deadline for applying to the EdD Program in Urban Education Leadership will be July 15, 2022. Details will be forthcoming regarding information sessions. Stay tuned.  Interested candidates are encouraged to reach out to Dr. Cynthia Barron at ckbarron@uic.edu for an individual one-on-one.
