Keeping Our Seniors Healthy & Safe

Our #1 concern this summer has been the health and safety of our seniors who have been the targets of anti-Asian violence. We are taking action by:

  • Delivering over 60,000 meals over the past year to Korean seniors in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties with the help of 41 volunteers.
  • Raising visibility and awareness of how anti-Asian violence is impacts our communities.
  • Handing out personal safety alarms and How to Report a Hate Crime booklets to over 1,300 monolingual Korean and Chinese seniors.
  • Offering Wellness Checks and a listening ear to isolated seniors during these challenging times.
  • Kickstarting the Bus4Hope Campaign to safely transport seniors to KCCEB’s San Leandro Community Center.
  • Making Disaster Preparedness Kits, learning about air pollution and how to stay safe during fire season.

We’re Ready This Fall:

  • We’re launching our Personal Safety & Defense Course for seniors in Cantonese, Mandarin and Korean. We will partner with senior centers and senior housing sites to teach elders how to be aware of their surroundings and stay safe on the streets.
  • We’re providing Korean meals to isolated seniors until Dec 2021

And there's more... #Bus4Hope is half way there...

In one month, with the help fo 369 donors we have raised over $40,000. Help us cross the finish line! With only $40,000 more to go, our seniors can gather together safely and be active!

Getting Our Communities Vaccinated

The best way to prevent yourself from COVID-19 is to get vaccinated. Our FREE COVID-19 vaccine clinics with Asian Health Services are now open in San Leandro! We offer Pfizer and Moderna for persons 12 and up. This Summer, we have hosted 5 clinics and plan to host more mobile clinics this year until our communities are fully vaccinated. Call (510) 735-3222 to sign up.

We’re Speaking Up This Fall:

Our community’s safety is important. We’re letting local public health departments know that Asian, Pacific Islander and other immigrant/refugee communities’ health are a priority. We are fighting for vaccine access, linguistic and cultural competence, smoke-free environments, safe neighborhoods, immigrant rights and solidarity with other communities of color.

Supporting Korean Small Businesses

Small businesses make our community thrive:

  • We hired 8 Korean restaurants to provide over 60,000 meals for isolated home bound Korean seniors, supporting more than 25 jobs during the past 16 months of the pandemic.
  • Need help? We provide information on local government grants supporting small businesses and language resources on federal relief funds and programs (PPP, SBA loans, etc).
Call BAKI (844) 828-2254 for more information.
  • We are developing the Community Thrive mobile app, a Korean-language resource guide and directory for small business owners. Resources include: How to report a crime or vandalism, how to find health, financial and legal support, and learning from other business owners.

Providing Legal & Immigration Consultations

During the pandemic, our community faced many challenges navigating government relief programs and understanding what legal rights and protections they had. We co-hosted weekly online legal clinics with Korean American Bar Association of Northern California and Korean Center, Inc to provide free legal consultations for limited English proficient individuals on diverse topics that were impacting their lives.

We helped answer COVID-19 related questions:

  • Unemployment Insurance (ex. Pandemic Unemployment Assistance)
  • Government Benefits (Workers’ Compensation, Social Security, etc.)
  • Tenants' rights under COVID-19 relief (ex. eviction moratorium)
  • The CARES Act
  • Immigration

And other legal topics:
Bankruptcy, Real Estate, Family Law, Personal Injury, Tax Law, Criminal Law, and Employment Law.

Free Naturalization & Citizenship Classes

Together, KCCEB and IIC help individuals apply for their N400 and enroll for Citizenship classes. This is open to all legal permanent residents!

Celebrating Our Communities

This May we celebrated Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with virtual and outdoor events highlighting our community services and advocacy.

  • API Heritage Celebration: We collaborated with Asian Pacfiic American Labor Alliance, Asian Health Services, Mental Health Association for Chinese Communities, Asian Pacific Environmental Network, Filipino Advocates for Justice, and our local unions to celebrate our API diversity, shared heritage and future.
  • Leave No One Behind: We are launching WeCare 將心比心, a Chinese language mobile app in the fall. This app serves as a resource hub for our long-neglected caregiver community who has been taking care of their loved ones with Dementia. Users can find dementia care strategies, self-care exercises, mental health tips, resource navigation, or anything caregivers might find helpful on the app.
  • Representation Matters: KCCEB represented the mental health needs and COVID-19 challenges for Asian communities at Asian Pacific Fund’s Summer Speaker Series and Alameda County Behavioral Health Office of Ethnic Service’s Diversity and Inclusion Panel.

The Power of Stories

Together, we can support each other in times of need.
  • This Fall, KCCEB is hosting immigration story sharing workshops, learning about Angel Island Immigration Station and how we can support immigrant rights today.
  • KCCEB's Youtube channel highlights stories lifting up immigrant communities experiences. Watch our latest videos and learn about smoking’s impact on the Korean community.
