News

Over the last two years, a group of parents and interested community members have come together to establish the first Gaelic immersion school in North America. Opening this September, with a combined grade primary/one class of students already enrolled, Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide is situated in Mabou, Inverness County, and will operate independent of the public school system.

Inspired by the Montessori method of education, which emphasizes hands-on learning and collaborative play, Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide draws on the example of immersion programs elsewhere and utilizes a model of education that fosters curiosity, creativity, and environmental stewardship. We believe it can be a game changer, but we can’t do it alone. As a non-profit society without government funding, Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide is dependant on private donations. Your support will go towards operational costs and provide much needed supplies for the classroom, including books and furniture.

If you believe in the value of Gaelic in Nova Scotia, please consider showing your support through a donation to Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide. Lionar bearn mór le clachan beaga (Great gaps may be filled with small stones).

Financial donations can be made HERE on the school's Go Fund Me.

If you would like more information, would like to help out in a larger way, or require a tax receipt, please get in touch via our website HERE.

Gaelic Community Interviews

Tapadh leibh for the interview Iain!

Over the summer, we will be conducting interviews with different members of the Nova Scotia Gaelic Community. We will be sharing these interviews in each edition of FIOS, so stay tuned to read about other members of the community.

Gàidheil air Adhart Fund | The Gaels Forward Fund

Comhairle na Gàidhlig is pleased to award a Gàidheil air Adhart grant to The Gaelic Song Education Project!

They are working with Gaelic teachers to produce high-quality and accessible Gaelic language lesson plans organized around Gaelic songs. They began by offering 4.5 hours of virtual educational development, offered free of charge to participants and designed to support the development of strong lesson plans. Participants are being offered the opportunity to create lesson plans -- for which they will be paid -- organized around songs known in Nova Scotia. It is important to pay participants for lesson plans both to motivate them and because most community language teachers have precarious work situations. These lesson plans will then be published under a CC license and made publicly accessible for anyone to adapt and use.

Over the past few weeks, we have been sharing different Gàidheil air Adhart recipients on our Social Media pages. To view the posts, please visit our Facebook page HERE
