80's Flashback Parade (Downtown Franklin, N.C.)- August 7th @ 9am 
Who hasn't dreamed about performing the famous Ferris Bueller's Day Off float scene through downtown Franklin, N.C.? What about rockin' out on a float to the sounds of Poison as you pretend to be C.C. DeVille on your "air-guitar" and your best friend is lip-syncing to " Unskinny Bop" like he's Bret Michaels? Well, here's your chance to live out your 80's fantasy! Join others for the 80's Flashback parade hosted in downtown Franklin. The parade is the second event of 80's Flashback Weekend: Always The First Weekend Of August and will start at Franklin's Town Hall parking lot and travel down Main Street to Harrison Avenue. There will be a variety of social clubs, etc from all around the southeast joining the weekend celebration and the parade. 9:00AM is the set-up time (9:30AM is the judging) and the parade will start at 10:00AM) CANDY IS ALLOWED TO BE TOSSED BY ENTRIES
There will be a "meet & greet" at the town square and winners of the BEST 80's theme entries will be announced after the parade. We know everyone loves the "AWESOME! 80's" so we are encouraging local clubs, groups, businesses, etc. to join the celebration by creating an 80's theme entry to the parade (Love Donation entry fees is the cost & 100% of the donations will be donated to the Greenville Shriners Hospital) There will be awards given to the top 3 best 80's theme entries.

Cherokee Trout Derby- 
We are excited to announce our 20th Annual Talking Trees Children’s Trout Derby will be August 7, 2021. We will have registration day on August 6, 2021. However, registration day will not be like it normally is. We will only be registering people and wanting them to leave once they are registered. We will not have any entertainment or ball drops on this day. Please follow this page for more updates and information on the Trout Derby.


Live Forgiven Church food ministry will host a curbside grocery giveaway on from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8. Everyone is welcome and groceries will be safely handled and distributed. Macon County Public Library will be hosting some NC author talks/book signings 
in the library at the end of the month and September. Susan Meissner, and on September 4th, Kristin Harmel. 

Car Seat Clinic Monday-Friday 8am-4pm closed 12-1 for lunch. Clinics will be held in the Beloced Womens and Children's Building 73 kaiser Wilnoty rd in Cherokee. Children Must be present and your EBCI enrollment card for both Parent and Childs. Car seat cost $20 for seats 

“Dillsboro After Five” will take place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in downtown Dillsboro. Start with a visit to the Jackson County Farmers Market located in the Innovation Station parking lot.


 Blue Ridge Parkway rangers will host a new outdoor interpretive series dubbed “Fridays at the Folk Art Center” at 7:30 p.m. every Friday this season at the Folk Art Center in Asheville. The building will not be open during the programs, with no restrooms available on site. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on.  828.298.5330, ext. 302.

Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts (Franklin) will host Travis LeDoyt (Elvis tribute) 7:30 p.m. Aug. 6. Tickets start at $20 per person. www.smokymountainarts.com

Nantahala Hiking Club will hike One Nose and Two Falls on Saturday, Aug. 7,  in the Standing Indian Recreational Area. they will hike to Picken’s Nose and see great views east to Highlands and south into Rabun Gap and Betty Creek, Ga. Nantahala Hiking Club will hike to Standing Indian Mountain on the AT from Deep Gap on Saturday, Aug. 7. Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter Telephone Support Group for Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia is designed to provide caregivers opportunities for sharing, education, and support through a telephone conference. Friends of the Greenway  FROG Quarters is now open Wednesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to  2 p.m.,  at 573 E. Main in Franklin. Stop by for coffee or a soft drink and a snack, use our free internet.  You can also reserve the shelters for your events there.

Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Centers in Cullowhee and Franklin have an educational parenting program to earn “points” to use to obtain free items for your family. The centers carry formula, diapers, wipes, baby items and clothing up to size 6, as well as strollers, car seats, high chairs, pack n’ plays, etc. Donations are always welcome. CareNet on Bidwell Street will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A box of food may be picked up once a week.

Uptown Gallery on Main Street new hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Five Fire Departments in Macon County – Nantahala, Cullasaja, Sky Valley, Clarks Chapel, and Burningtown – are open Monday thru Fridays for drive up food deliveries from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who needs food.

Macon County Public Health is currently vaccinating those eligible under Groups 4. People in Group 4  are those who have a medical condition that puts them at higher risk of serious illness and people who live in certain congregate settings are eligible for vaccination. The rest of Group 4, which includes all other essential workers and all adults will become eligible April 7. Individuals that want to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, must call Macon County’s Vaccine Call Center at (828)524-1500 to register and schedule an appointment. The Call Center is open Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
