Explorer Weekly Update
August 13, 2021
Dear Explorer Families,
It was a great first week of school - even with all the rain! It was exciting to see our students seeing their friends and meeting new faces and to see them interacting with their teachers. We look forward to an awesome school year ahead, where our students experience growth while accessing technological resources to prepare them for college and career.
All students will be taking their first i-Ready Diagnostic test the week of August 23rd. The data collected will serve as a baseline to determine where our students’ strengths are and build upon them. Please encourage your child to do their best.
Parents, mark your calendars:
The first soccer game is Wednesday, August 25th at Discovery MS at 5:00 p.m.
Fall Individual Picture Day is Tuesday, August 31st
Parents who are interested in obtaining their child’s FSA/EOC scores, need to send a note to the main office.
The After School Zone is available Monday through Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. This program is free to all students. If you are interested in enrolling your child into the After School Zone, you can pick up an application in the main office.
Please remind your children that handwashing is one of the best ways to protect themselves and your family from getting sick.
Thank you for your continued support of Discovery Middle as we “Prevail in Excellence.”
Sincerely,
Dr. Fernández

Teachers are Superheroes!
Oh, Snap! We’re Back! was the Discovery theme for the first day of school. We were so excited to see all the students and welcome them to campus Marvel-style. Thank you to all of the teachers that participated in this fun day.
A Message from Mrs. LaSala
All students should now have laptops. If you have a student who does not have a laptop, please have them go to the media center first period on Monday.
Some of our new students are still unable to log into Google Chrome. This is a District-wide issue that is being worked on by Google in conjunction with our District IT department. They hope to have this resolved soon.
Also, all students and teachers are experiencing issues with websites being blocked. This is also a District-wide issue that is being worked on by the IT department.
We understand your concerns and appreciate your patience.

It is important that we remain consistent in adhering to guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:
Face coverings are meant to protect other people in case the wearer is unknowingly infected but does not have symptoms.
Physical distancing also called “social distancing,” means keeping a safe space between yourself and other people who are not from your household.
Physical distancing combined with mask-wearing can help slow the spread of COVID-19.
Encourage alternate means of greeting expressions to assist with physical distancing and maintain separation (i.e. minimize gestures that promote close contact, discourage shaking hands, fist or elbow bumps, and hugging. Instead wave and verbally greet them.)
Handwashing is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick. After you have been in a public place and touched an item or surface that may be frequently touched by other people, such as door handles, tables, countertops, chairs, sinks, shared pens, elevator buttons, and microphones. Always wash or sanitize your hands before touching your eyes, nose, or mouth because that’s how germs enter our bodies.
Health monitoring and recognizing the signs and symptoms are crucial to help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.
People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposureto the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:
