The 2021-22 Presbyterian Women Horizons Bible Study is entitled "What My Grandmothers Taught Me: Learning from the Women In Matthew's Genealogy of Jesus."

Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary—Matthew names these women for a reason. How might Jesus have heard the stories of his grandmothers? What can these Grandmothers-of-the-Faith teach us?  By exploring these stories together, we will gain a richer understanding of God's good news in Jesus Christ.

This study will be led by Lib McGregor Simmons, parish associate at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.  It will meet via Zoom on the last Sunday of each month from 7-8 p.m.  The first meeting will be August 29.

The study is open to all and will be especially helpful for persons who will be leading their monthly circle Bible study.

Register for the class HERE, and you will be sent an automatic Zoom link.

The webinar will present the vision and tools for designs for designing Christian practices formation programs. There will examples of curriculum approaches, program designs, and learning activities that churches can use. Mackay Presbyterian Mission – Presbyterian Home Services Ministry

The Presbyterian Home Services Ministry is a ministry created by the Mackay Presbyterian Mission in order to serve as an intermediary between people, churches or entities in need of some kind of residential maintenance or construction services with people or groups of Hispanic/Latino workers in our community. Sadly, our families often face economic, health and safety insecurity due to the lack of employment or the lack of fair compensation for work performed. The ministry has been created to help alleviate some of those concerns. The following are a list of services offered by the ministry:

  • Painting
  • Metal Roofing
  • Roof Shingles
  • Wood Framing
  • Porch
  • Siding
  • Screened Porch
  • Install Windows
  • Wood Flooring
  • Concrete flooring
  • Foundation

The procedure will be as follow; the Mackay Presbyterian Mission receives a request of service, then we contact qualified/competent personnel who can effectively and satisfactorily complete the request.  The person or group interested in the service will receive a quote for the requested work. All economic negotiations will be between the party requesting the service and the person or group that will perform the service. The Mackay Presbyterian Mission will not receive any economic compensation for any involvement. Charleston Atlantic Presbytery does not endorse the particular contractors nor does it warrant the work. Southern US Border Mission Trip
(MacAllen - Brownsville - Reynosa (Mx) - Matamoros (Mx)

Dr. Will McCorkle, friend of our Presbytery and Mackay Presbyterian Mission Collaborator write to us:

We would like to invite you to join us the third week in October at the southern border to be involved with ministry on both the US and Mexican side particularly to asylum-seekers from Central America. We will be staying in McAllen, Texas and crossing over to Reynosa, Mexico. This opportunity is open to anyone of ours churches those who would like to consider having their congregation be more involved with work related to immigration. The trip will be led by Antonio Colon from the presbytery and Will McCorkle, an education professor at College of Charleston and board member with Practice Mercy, a border ministry. Please reach out to Will directly at mccorklewd@cofc.edu for more information. One of the greatest missions the church in the US has right now is how we embrace those coming to our southern border. We would love for you and your church to take part in that mission.

We are also offering detailed information about it in a S.T.E.P.S. workshop: “Of Immigrants, Refugees and Exiles: A Christian Approach to Our Neighbors on the Southern Border." Register for the workshop ONLINE.
Gathering Around Books (The GAB Group)
4th Friday of each month, 5:30 p.m.

Do you love to read and discuss what you have read with fellow bibliophiles?  If so, Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church invites you join them for a monthly discussion facilitated by Parish Associate Lib McGregor Simmons of a fiction or non-fiction book which may not be overtly religious, but contains content and themes that can be discussed from a faith perspective.

The discussion is open to anyone who loves to read and discuss what one has read with fellow bibliophiles. Even if you have not finished the book, you are invited as we talk about these short stories with particular attention to themes related to faith and religion. Register to here to join. You will be sent an automatic Zoom link upon registration.
The August 27 GAB book Nomadland by Jessica Bruder was the inspiration for the film which was awarded the most recent Best Picture Oscar. One reviewer has written, "This is an important book.… A calmly stated chronicle of devastation. But told as story after story, it is also a riveting collection of tales about irresistible people―quirky, valiant people who deserve respect and a decent life."
Upcoming Books
September 24: Abide With Me by Elizabeth Strout
October 22: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

The Village at Summerville will be hosting an Older Adult Recognition High Tea on Friday, October 1, 2021 at 3:30 PM at The Village of Summerville. We are inviting congregations, to select and submit a name of someone, or a couple, 65 and over, who have made or continues to make significant contributions to the life of their church and/or their community.

We will invite them, along with one of the Pastoral Staff and up to two family members to join them at this recognition.  We recognize that Older Adults continue to be the life-blood of most of our congregations.  As Simeon and Anna in Luke’s Gospel were honored by the gospel writer, we wish to honor these older adults who quite often are the prayer support, if not the visionaries of the church, bringing forward the ancient history and hopes of the past into the present, and even projecting prophetically what God will do.

You can read the full letter, along with the required recognition form, HERE. Please be sure we have your submission no later than August 31.
