Research Retreat

* We are currently planning for an in-person event following CDC recommendations and UA policy, and we will keep you informed as to any changes leading up to the event.

Join us for this annual event that brings together Alaska INBRE researchers and students in celebration of research in the Alaska INBRE program. The retreat will feature keynotes on infectious diseases and core resources, and highlight new ideas and discoveries in cerebral ischemia and cancer. There will be multiple poster sessions featuring exciting research across our network including undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs.

The Omics Research Symposium is a virtual event that will bring together experts on bioinformatics and discuss the need for effective training and research support making big data processing and integration accessible across various life science domains. The symposium will highlight new challenges arising from cheaper data, changing views on genomics among the public and advances in AI/ML. At the same time, we will identify ways students and faculty can get involved in this exciting field and discuss successful programs that have built a pipeline for bioinformatics training starting from high schools and into advanced post-graduate degrees.

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH GRANT WRITING COACHING GROUP STUDY - Applications for Cohort 5 are due by Sept 13, 2021.  Are you finding it challenging to learn the intricacies of writing NIH-style research proposals? Do you struggle with making a compelling case to reviewers for the importance of your research project? Are you having trouble getting consistent feedback from experts as you write research proposals? If any or all of these apply to you, then consider applying for entry into the University of Utah Grant Writing Coaching Group Study. Group coaching for Cohort 5 will take place Jan-May 2022. You must be targeting an NIH submission deadline of May-Sept 2022, or Oct-Dec 2022. All study participants will engage in a 5-month long, writing-intensive, small group coaching experience designed to refine their proposal writing skills and facilitate timely submission of their proposals. The coaching used in this study has been developed for over 10 years and expanded to national groups since 2014 through the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN). Find more information here.

A team of UA biomedical researchers have joined a federally funded effort to improve tracking of COVID-19 variants throughout the state. The NIH grant supports efforts to sequence and analyze genomes of variants circulating in Alaska. Participants include UAF researchers Jack Chen and Devin Drown, and UAA researchers Jason Burkhead, Cindy Knall and Eric Bortz, with collaborators Southcentral Foundation and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.
