As we venture into the month of August, many of us are coping with smoky skies from an over-abundance of fires.
August is a Latin word, mean consecrated or auspicious. Spiritually it is said to be the energy of completion, a time to tie up loose ends and move into a brighter future. I am reminded of Lord Nataraja, the Lord of the Cosmic Dance of creation, preservation and destruction.
Nataraja is a form of Siva, who in Hindu mythology represents transformation. Nataraja is surrounded by a circle of flames. Fire burns things and from the ashes springs forth the creation of something new. Symbolically if we want to personally transform, we must let go of the old to make way for the new. Old patterns of behaviour, old ways of thinking, old items that are no longer useful…
Change can be fearful because we do not know what comes next. The Bhaya mudra in one of the right hands of Nataraja is turning away fear (the hand upright with the palm facing forward), encouraging us to have faith in the process.
With all the fires and smoke, I believe Mother Earth is loudly calling out to us to please preserve her. She cannot handle the imbalance of abuse vs care, and she needs proper balance in the elements supporting life. Here are a couple of mantras I am dedicating to her.
This Vishnu Mantra “Om Nimaya Namaha” is to restore proper balance. It rules over the sun, moon, air, water, the 8 directions – all the forces that operate in nature.
This Siva Mantra “Om Pashu’patiyei Namaha”, is to help protect all the animals who are suffering in this world, no less due to our abuse of it.
May your August be transformative and the beginning of a bright new future ahead.
