Social Events

At Last we can plan some proper social events.  The first is our:

Bring and Share Supper - Wednesday 25th August

Does what it says on the tin!   This is the last Wednesday sailing before the schools go back, so come for a sail, bring something to eat to share, and the bar will be open.  No booking required

Bank Holiday event - Summer Party - Monday 30th August 2pm onwards

This is a summer party for all members to celebrate the full re-opening of the club post lockdown, and to thank our members for their support during this difficult period.

This is a free event for ALL members.  There will be a late afternoon barbeque, some games on the water for children, some lawn games, a race with a difference for everyone (adults and youth - why not sail together) and even some prizes.   The bar will be open, so come, stay and enjoy what we hope will be a lovely afternoon.   We have to know numbers for catering for this event, so we are asking members to sign up for the event using the link below.   There is an initial charge of £5.00 per head, but this will be refunded on the day to all who attend.

Quiz Night on Saturday 16th October - Save the Date

Start swotting and selecting your team members and look out for further details in upcoming newsletters.

Bar Staff

In the recent members' survey some people asked if the bar could be open more often.  Our bar manager, Nigel, will keep the bar stocked, but cannot be on site all the time.   As a volunteer club, if you would like to have the bar open more often, we need lots of members to give a little of their time to open the bar and serve drinks.   Nigel is happy to show anyone (over 18) the very simple ropes - contact him on nigel.mills@gmail.com if you would like to get involved.
The Cruising WhatsApp Group

There is an active WhatsApp Group where members chat about all things club related, from weather to organising sailing.   If you would like to be included please text Jenny on 07752 333486 to get added.
The more the merrier.

Adult Training - Level 2 Opportunity

The adult training team have been flat out this year delivering courses in a covid secure way to lots and lots of members.  We can now offer an opportunity for members who have RYA Level 1 or can rig, launch and recover a dinghy, and sail a fairly tidy triangular course using all points of sailing, to up their skill levels to hopefully achieve RYA Level 2.

The course will run on Wednesday Evenings for theory and Saturday mornings for sailing starting on Saturday 2nd October (9-12.30) and finishing on Wednesday 27th October.

If you are interested in joining this course, please email training@papercourt-sc.org.uk as soon as possible, as we expect high demand for places.

Duties and Duty Swaps - Please Read

As advised in previous newsletters, duties have now started to be auto allocated for the period up to the end of the year.  As part of our volunteer ethos,  every adult member has to undertake two duties per year one in the first half and one in the second half of the year.   We always advise members to select their own duty dates, as this avoids the system auto-allocating a date that does not suit.

Once a duty is allocated, it is the responsibility of the member to find a substitute if they are unable to do the date.  The way to do this is to go to Sailing Club Manager on the website,  find someone who has a similar duty to you, look up their contact details in the Membership Directory and open negotiations.  It may take a couple of goes to find a swap.  Then register it on the Sailing Club Manager system, or email duties@papercourt-sc.org.uk, to let them know the details.

The Duties Team have advised that they have been receiving a number of emails from members asking for alternative dates.   The system is as above, you have to find your own swaps.

Many other clubs require more duties than we do, and it is usually a nice social day at the club, so please if you have not already been allocated a duty up to December, click the button below and pick your own dates.

There are guidance notes on the Duties page, and if you are worried you won't know what to do, pop along on another day, and shadow whoever is on duty for a couple of hours to find out more.

Did You Know?

Our recent members survey brought to light some things that members want to know more about so starting with:

Cruising

The club welcomes members to cruise as long as there is safety boat cover.   The rostered safety boat times are Wednesday evenings in the summer (last one this year is 8th September), so launch at 6.30 till dusk.  Saturday Afternoons from 1.00 to about 4pm.  Sunday all day from 10.00am to about 4pm.

At all those times there should be a safety boat on the water.  If there is racing, you can still cruise all over the lake, but if the race is busy at the far end, you may prefer to keep to the clubhouse end.

In addition in Summer Term Times we have Tuesday mornings, when volunteers man the safety boats.  In this Summer holidays we additionally have Tuesday 17th and  Tuesday 31st August, when cover will be provided.

As well as all of that, any member who has a Power Boat level 2 Certificate can launch a safety boat to provide cover for others, at any time when the lake is not being used for other purposes - eg training or outside events.  The WhatsApp group above is a good way to arrange sessions.

Look at the Calendar on the website to check what is going on before planning your day out.
