Innovative Mason Program Receives $20 Million for Five-Year Extension

EMDP2 Began at Mason's SciTech Campus in 2014

Mason further solidified its strong relationship with the military community with a five-year, $20 million extension of the Enlisted to Medical Degree Preparatory Program (EMDP2).

Through a partnership with the Uniformed Services University of Health Services (USU), highly qualified active-duty military members complete an intense, two-year academic program that prepares them for medical school. Mason provides the coursework, Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) prep courses and pre-health advising on a contract basis.

Roughly 92% of the program’s students have been accepted into medical schools so far, with more than 100 currently attending medical school.

Mason Research Could Change the Way Concussions are Diagnosed

Mason researchers Shane Caswell and Chip Petricoin, in collaboration with global partners, have discovered the same protein biomarkers in the saliva of youth and collegiate athletes who have experienced concussive and sub-concussive impacts. The research could spark development of a rapid, noninvasive, saliva-based test for concussion diagnosis and management.

Ohajunwa, a rising senior at The Governor’s School @ Innovation Park on Mason’s Science and Technology Campus, first gained exposure to research through participation in Mason’s Aspiring Scientists Summer Internship Program (ASSIP) in the summer of 2020.
