Gillett Public Library

Fall 2021
Volume 1, Issue 1

Director's Corner

Another school year is upon us and new events are coming to the Gillett Public Library! One of our new events will be a monthly “Movie Night” at the Gillett Community Center at 5:30 pm on the second Friday of the month.

We had plenty of fun during the Summer Reading Program! We celebrated moms, dads, and grandparents! We learned about caterpillars, butterflies, fish, dogs, and cats!

We splashed our sidewalk with color, we decorated tiles for drinking coasters, and we had all sang together! Next year’s Summer Reading Program will take us ‘under the sea’ with “Oceans of Possibilities.” Oceanography topics will be the theme, so get ready to jump into the watery abyss and see what lurks beneath!

Movie Nights at Gillett Public Library

""All movies will be held on the second Friday of the month at 5:30 pm in the Gillett Community Center! Donations welcome. In case of inclement weather (blizzard, ice, dangerous temps) or school closing, movie night will have to be canceled. Follow our Facebook page for cancellation notices.

Our September movie is The Neverending Story (PG/1984). An unhappy young boy discovers a book in an old bookstore. He becomes engrossed in the story of this land, which is about to be destroyed by the evil force called the “Nothing.” He finds himself engrossed in this book and learns that he alone can save the world inside the book.

Future movies include:

  • October: Night at the Museum (PG/2006)
  • November: The House with A Clock In Its Walls (PG/2018)
  • December: Frozen (PG/2013)

Learn more about all of our upcoming movies on our blog.

Banned Books Week: Sept. 26 - Oct. 2, 2021

Books Unite Us, Censorship Divides UsLaunched in 1982, Banned Books Week celebrates the value of free, open access to information.  Librarians, booksellers, teachers, journalists, and others in the book community celebrate the freedom to express ideas, including those which some consider unpopular or unorthodox. “Challenged” books are those that people have requested be removed from libraries, bookstores, and publishers. “Banned” books have been removed from shelves and stores.

Many books have been “banned” and “challenged” over the years. George by Alex Gino (LGBTQ/religion), Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds (Racism), and All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely (Profanity, drug use, and alcoholism and because it was thought to promote antipolice views, contain other divisive topics) were the top three “challenged” books of 2020.
