Whistler children connect with and learn about local diversity…

With the aim of bringing cultures together for positive intercultural interactions, Whistler Multicultural Society delivered its first Multicultural Day Camps this summer. By experiencing aspects of different cultures in a fun and supportive environment, we hope to give children a different perspective which will help them develop a life-long curiosity and interest in valuing and promoting diversity and inclusion.

Thanks so much to our local multicultural guides - Nawal, Bouchra, Khadija, Emi and Ayako for hosting our first Multicultural Summer Day Camps, and for sharing your home cultures, experiences and food...

This first year, we enjoyed cultural days from Morocco and Japan and the children who joined us learned about the language, food, arts and culture of those two countries as well as cooking and eating their own Moroccan and Japanese meals.

To read more about how it went, read this article from the Pique and visit the multicultural camp site to see photos of the fun we had at sites.google.com/wmsociety.ca/connectingcultures. Watch this space for details of next year’s camps and other multicultural activities.

REMINDER #6
RACISM CAN HAPPEN IN EVERYDAY CONVERSATIONS.
Say you ask someone who looks different from you where they’re really from. Your intention might not be hateful. But the question is still racist. It says you see them as an outsider. Racism can be unintentional, which is why we all need to be intentional about being anti-racist.

MEET THE ARTIST:
[CHEYENNE MANNING]

Cheyenne is a Vancouver artist and designer. Her father is from Trinidad, a Caribbean callaloo of cultures. Her Mother is mixed Indigenous/European, specifically OjibwayAnishinaabe from the Curve Lake First Nation in Ontario. With a BA in Visual Communications, she colourfully blends design, nature and culture.

A collection of talented BC-based artists created the illustrations seen across the campaign.

It’s hard to discuss racism. It’s awkward. It stirs up a lot of strong emotions. But it’s worth it, as we work toward a more equitable society.
