Who Will be Your Superhero of Slam?

After 10 heats across Europe the hottest talent in slam poetry is gathering for the ultimate lingual battle in Berlin at the Superheroes of Slam final. Taking place on the 2nd October during Berlin’s Wicked Festival we hope to livestream some of the performances to you on the night, in particular poetry from Manchester’s very own Jardel Rodrigues.

A Poetic Declaration at Ripples of Hope Festival

The Ripples of Hope Festival is taking place at HOME Manchester this September. One of the headline events, A Poetic Declaration, involves 30 poets from around the world delivering a unique poetic response to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The list of poets involved includes Commonword writer Keisha Thompson, Mike Garry and Raymond Antrobus.

Workshops
Novel Writing Group is Recruiting

Commonword's Novel Writing Group is returning in September and they are currently recruiting for new members. The group meet twice a month to share their writing and give and receive constructive feedback on their novels. It is a supportive and safe place to build tenacity and resilience during your writing process.

If you are interested in learning more or joining the group you can attend their Open Event on Monday 20th September at 7pm, on Zoom.

Black Queer Book Club

Commonword's Black Queer Book Club is beginning to get international readers coming to join us on the fourth Thursday, every month [except December].  Hope to see more of you joining.
 
Our next few selections:
 
September -- Black Deutschland, by Darryl Pinkney :  Young, black and gay, Jed tries out the expat life in 80s Berlin.
 
October -- If You Could Be Mine, Sara Farizan -- Sahar and Nasrin can't be together as two women in Iran, but sex changes are legal and available -- will that be their solution?
 
November -- An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon -- Aster is a dark-skinned sharecropper in the bowels of a spaceship taking the last of humanity to a mythical Promised Land...

And coming soon to Commonword's website, a review of our July book, Guapa by  Saleem Haddad, winner of the 2017 Polari First Book Prize.
