FREE EVENING BAT WALKS
led by Heaton Mersey Village Conservation Group and
Sustainable Living in the Heatons

The best time to see and detect bats is as they come out to hunt for flying insects at dusk. Two guides take out parties of about six people and use our bat detection monitor to identify what is seen.  We meet in Heaton Mersey, near Station Road about twenty minutes before sunset. The walk takes about an hour.

These evenings are fun and interesting, and places are booking up fast! We've just released a few more places so it's worth checking out what's available. But please also let us know if you need to cancel so someone else can take your place(s).

If you would like to come but have difficulties with your mobility we may have some specific evenings that would suit you best, so let us know by contacting us at info@slheatons.org

This is a collaboration between Sustainable Living in the Heatons and Heaton Mersey Village Conservation Group to increase awareness and appreciation of our local bats and other fauna. Expertise in designing the walks comes from a local ecologist Jeff Clarke, with the help of a grant from Stockport Hydro Environmental Challenge Fund.
HEATONS SUNFLOWER PROJECT

BUILDING A BUG HOTEL AT THE ECO RELAY EVENT
Thursday 9th September 3.30-5.00pm
St Paul's Church, Heaton Moor Road, Heaton Moor

The Young Christian Climate Network (YCCN) are carrying a boat by relay from the G7 Summit in Cornwall to the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in November to raise awareness of the climate crisis. You can find out more about this exciting project here. The boat (made out of a coffin) will be coming to the Heatons, calling at St Paul's Church for a few hours, where you can see it!

SLH and other local groups will be there to welcome the boat with fun, interactive activities for everyone. The SLH bug hotel will stay in the church grounds where we'll all be able to inspect it for residents! If you want to bring some material, or you can't join us and want to build your own hotel in the garden see here for the RSPB or here for Woodland Trust recommendations.

THE GREAT BIG GREEN WEEK
 18th- 26th September 2021

The Great Big Green Week is co-ordinated by The Climate Coalition,  the UK’s largest group of people dedicated to action against climate change. The week is an important time to focus our energies in the run up to COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021, when the world’s leaders will unite to tackle climate change.

SLH have organised a few local events for the week.

TACKLING CLIMATE CHAOS IN THE HEATONS - A DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT IS POSSIBLE
20th September 8pm using zoom

Are you confused, or perhaps frustrated, by all you hear and see concerning climate change? What will the COP 26 do when it meets in Glasgow?

Why not put questions directly to some local experts and listen to their take on the reality of climate change. Ask why the Government is not being honest about the changes it is going to require of us.

Sustainable Living in the Heatons is hosting a free Zoom Event and Q&A to explore what climate change will mean to us locally .

Our experts include:

Mark Atherton - Lead on climate matters for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority
Phil Korbel - Director of the Climate Literacy Project
Stephen Dootson - Local renewables business person

Please register and book a place here.

SLH 10TH ANIVERSARY CELEBRATION!
19th September 3-5pm, SLH Orchard, The Meadows, Heaton Chapel

Sustainable Living in the Heatons had our very first meeting at the end of 2010. We invite supporters to our delayed 10th Anniversary Celebration!

We are inviting everyone who has been involved in SLH at any time, in any capacity. We'd also love to see the local organisations and businesses with which we have collaborated, and professionals who have supported us over the years. Families and children are welcome.

We’ll have some light refreshments and drinks, some reminders of all the amazing things we’ve done and achieved over the years, and a stall with some interactive activities for all ages to remind us what we can still do to fight climate change and preserve our environment.

If you'd like to join us please let us know by 12th September to info@slheatons.org so we know numbers for refreshments.  If the weather is bad, we’ll postpone. Contact us if you are unsure.

We hope you will join us. For details of where to find the community orchard see our website

SLH CYCLE RIDES 2021
Sunday September 12th is our final led ride of the 2021 series

Media City, Salford Docks and Ordsall Hall.
It's a trip of contrasts ….. with the journey there using the Fallowfield Loop to 3 very different destinations within a stone’s throw of each other: Media City’s new steel & glass, the Victorian heavy duty masonry and bridges of the Salford docks and then Ordsall Hall, parts of which date from 1360 with, in its grounds, carefully tended allotments. It's a flat 22 mile ride.

Meet at 10:15 Community Orchard by The Meadows, Heaton Chapel.

Booking is essential by contacting cycling@slheatons.org

HEDGE MAINTENANCE

We meet on the third Sunday of each month, 10am to 12 noon, to maintain our ancient hedge. We clear the area on either side, pick litter, and do all we can to help it to thrive.  Wear sturdy shoes and long sleeves and bring gloves, secateurs, shears and a trowel if you have them, although we will come with some equipment. The hedge is between Priestnall allotments and the recreation field, on the lane that links Trentham Avenue (SK4 3QD) and Mersey Road. Everyone is welcome.
For more information email us at info@slheatons.org

But we also have another request. When we layered the hedge over 5 years ago, we had guidance and training from a local hedge expert and coppicing professional, who has now moved away. If you, or someone you know, has specialist knowledge and would be able to help us, please contact info@slheatons.org

SLH MONTHLY MEETINGS

The SLH monthly meetings are on the first Saturday of the month 10.30am-12.00 noon.   We've now decided to start meeting face to face. The next meeting will be on 4th September 2021 meeting at The Heatons Centre, next to Heatons Library, Thornfield Rd, SK4 3LD (For sat nav please use SK4 4DQ). The entrance is at the back of the centre, where you should ring the bell for the conference room. Hot drinks will be provided for everyone. It is a large well-ventilated room.

We are grateful to Stockport Signpost for Carers in allowing us the use of The Heatons Centre at a generous fee. Signpost for Carers (registered charity no: 1085727) owns and manages the use of the Heatons Centre. Surplus income generated from the use of this community space is used to support the wellbeing of those caring for friends and relatives across Stockport.

Everyone is welcome to our meeting. Contact info@slheatons.org if you have questions. We use the time to discuss and plan our activities, and have occasional guest speakers.  Everyone is welcome. Do come and meet us!
