We are about to find out the winners of the competition to find the biggest head, the tallest sunflower and the sunflower with the most heads!  We've had a lot of fantastic pictures so far and are busy collating the results. We'll let you know soon.

BUILDING A BUG HOTEL AT THE ECO RELAY EVENT
Thursday 9th September 3.30-5.00pm
St Paul's Church, Heaton Moor Road, Heaton Moor 

The Young Christian Climate Network (YCCN) are carrying a boat by relay from the G7 Summit in Cornwall to the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in November to raise awareness of the climate crisis. You can find out more about this exciting project here. The boat (made out of a coffin) will be coming to the Heatons, calling at St Paul's Church for a few hours, where you can see it!  

SLH and other local groups will be there to welcome the boat with fun, interactive activities for everyone. The SLH bug hotel will stay in the church grounds where we'll all be able to inspect it for residents! If you want to bring some material, or you can't join us and want to build your own hotel in the garden see here for the RSPB or here for Woodland Trust recommendations.


THE GREAT BIG GREEN WEEK
 18^th- 26^th September 2021

The Great Big Green Week is co-ordinated by The Climate Coalition,  the UK’s largest group of people dedicated to action against climate change. The week is an important time to focus our energies in the run up to COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021, when the world’s leaders will unite to tackle climate change.

SLH have organised a few local events for the week.

TACKLING CLIMATE CHAOS IN THE HEATONS - A DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT IS POSSIBLE

Are you confused, or perhaps frustrated, by all you hear and see concerning climate change? What will the COP 26 do when it meets in Glasgow?

Why not put questions directly to some local experts and listen to their take on the reality of climate change. Ask why the Government is not being honest about the changes it is going to require of us.

FILM 2040 AT THE SAVOY CINEMA
22^nd September 6pm 

2040, an acclaimed Australian documentary film looking at the effects of climate change over the next 20 years, is coming to our lovely local cinema!  Introduced by one of the SLH team, we'll also have a stall in the foyer beforehand, so come and meet us there.  Book your seats at the Savoy here.   

SLH 10TH ANIVERSARY CELEBRATION!
19^th September 3-5pm, SLH Orchard, The Meadows, Heaton Chapel 

Sustainable Living in the Heatons had our very first meeting at the end of 2010. We invite supporters to our delayed 10^th Anniversary Celebration!
 
We are inviting everyone who has been involved in SLH at any time, in any capacity. We'd also love to see the local organisations and businesses with which we have collaborated, and professionals who have supported us over the years. Families and children are welcome.
 
We’ll have some light refreshments and drinks, some reminders of all the amazing things we’ve done and achieved over the years, and a stall with some interactive activities for all ages to remind us what we can still do to fight climate change and preserve our environment.

SLH CYCLE RIDES 2021
Sunday September 12th is our final led ride of the 2021 series

Media City, Salford Docks and Ordsall Hall.
It's a trip of contrasts ….. with the journey there using the Fallowfield Loop to 3 very different destinations within a stone’s throw of each other: Media City’s new steel & glass, the Victorian heavy duty masonry and bridges of the Salford docks and then Ordsall Hall, parts of which date from 1360 with, in its grounds, carefully tended allotments. It's a flat 22 mile ride. 

Meet at 10:15 Community Orchard by The Meadows, Heaton Chapel.

HEDGE MAINTENANCE

We meet on the third Sunday of each month, 10am to 12 noon, to maintain our ancient hedge. We clear the area on either side, pick litter, and do all we can to help it to thrive.  Wear sturdy shoes and long sleeves and bring gloves, secateurs, shears and a trowel if you have them, although we will come with some equipment. The hedge is between Priestnall allotments and the recreation field, on the lane that links Trentham Avenue (SK4 3QD) and Mersey Road. Everyone is welcome.
