Mahuru | September 2021
 Kia ora koutou,

The sun is shining as I write, which always lifts my mood – hopefully the sunshine and clear skies will continue for our Level 3 weekend in the Manawatū. We send you warm wishes from our CSC team, and hope that things are OK for you and your whanau, and that you are able to access support if you need it. There are lots of services working to support our local communities, in Palmy and across the regions — many of them connected into our Community Services Council network. Thank you to everyone working especially hard in this time to meet the needs of our community.

We are holding weekly Wednesday Zoom meetings for our CSC members in Levels 3 and 4. Check your inbox or get in touch with us if you'd like to join in with that. These meetings are great for connection and sharing information about what you are doing in your services, and the community needs you are seeing. If you're not a CSC member organisation but would like to see what it’s all about by joining this meeting, please do email me directly emma.ochei@pncsc.org.nz

Maybe you’ll have a bit more time this month to read through Flax — perhaps with a cup of tea. There's a few less events on this month because of lockdown, but you'll find some information below about vaccinations, PNCC's Strategic Priority Grants, and updates from various services. It’s OK to find this a challenging time, consider your own needs as your read this, as well as the needs of your clients. Perhaps there are services you could reach out to for support or for practical needs.

This morning we held a webinar on Avoiding Burnout and Mental Fatigue. Thank you to Rico from Neurofit for speaking to us, and to everyone who logged on for it, there was a great turnout for an important topic as our community sector staff and volunteers take time to prioritise their own mental health.

Our CSC team is working from home at this time – please do reach out to Tim, Jo, Kanchana or myself by email if there is any way we can assist.

Noho ora mai,
Emma
In this pānui:

PALMERSTON NORTH CITY COUNCIL UPDATE

Kia ora koutou,

I’m very aware most of us are working remotely from home or providing only essential services at this time. I hope you’re all managing to get through and looking after yourselves as well as your clients. Sometimes it can be as hard to stay home when you want to be useful as it is for those who are busy during lockdowns. Remember we all have our part to play in ensuring the success of the public health response. Council’s COVID-19 Relief Fund is still open for organisations that need financial help because of increased demand on services, or reduction in income due to the pandemic: Covid-19 Relief Fund.

Council meetings have been continuing remotely in levels 4 and 3. We will not meet in person until level 2. Committee meetings are on hold until level 2.

Council recently launched a trial of the Companion Card programme. This is a partnership between PNCC and Mana Whaikaha to enable people in the disability community to attend events without having to pay for an extra ticket for their support person. Participating venues so far are Centrepoint, Regent on Broadway, Globe Theatre and Te Manawa. People eligible for a card can apply online at palmycompanioncard.co.nz

Applications for Council’s Strategic Priority Grants open on September 6th. This is a three-year funding opportunity for community-led projects, activities or services that align with Council’s strategic priorities. All the information you need is available at pncc.govt.nz. The review of our Community Funding and Support Policy has not yet taken place, and so this round of applications will be under the existing policy.

The next Community Development Committee meeting will be at 1pm on Wednesday 22nd September, assuming we are in level 2 by then. You can attend in person or watch online at the time, or later, on Council’s website and You Tube channel.

Take care everyone,
Ngā mihi nui,
Lorna

NGĀ MIHI NĀ TŌ TĀTOU MEMA O TE PAREMATA
UPDATE FROM OUR MP

Kia Orana kotou katoatoa!

I’d like to express my heartfelt thanks. We’re an incredible team who really look out for each other. The fact that we stick together, and do all we can to knock COVID-19 to ground, means we’re well-placed to stamp out this more infectious Delta variant.

Palmerston North is faring well. There’s Government support for those who need it. And you all, as our highly dedicated iwi and community sector, are always ready and willing to get stuck in and do the mahi – a big thank you for that!

Our vaccine rollout is a key part of our COVID response. MidCentral have been active in their swabbing and vaccination efforts in our city. I’ve had my first COVID-19 vaccine and I urge you, if you haven’t already, to book yours in.  Everyone over 12 years old can book their COVID vaccine (just go to bookmyvaccine.nz or call 0800 28 29 26).

Thank you to everyone for doing their bit to stamp out COVID-19. Our strength comes from our unity. Together we can come out stronger.

Tangi Utikere MP
Member of Parliament for Palmerston North

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 13-19 Mahuru
Māori Language Week 13-19 September

Māori Language Week has been celebrated each year from 1975. September 14 commemorates the presentation of the 1972 Māori language petition to parliament.

Kia kaha te reo Māori
‘Kia kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand with its meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about language health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia kaha te reo Māori’ we’re saying  - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.

There are some great resources and ideas for celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori in your organisations at tetaurawhiri.govt.nz and reomaori.co.nz.

Stress has the power to destroy our peace of mind and rob us of our happiness. It can present itself in different ways, from a knot in our stomach, to feeling restless, or finding it difficult to get a good night's sleep. It may sneak in as a vague sense of irritation or impatience, and may just look like a raised eyebrow or silence, rather than kindness. Sometimes we find ourselves feeling anxious, powerless, or perhaps that we're somehow just not good enough.

We will explore how much of the stress and tension we normally experience comes from our mind. The teachings in this series will provide clear, positive, and practical advice and meditations to help us recognise, deal with, and eventually overcome our anxiety and stress. Gradually we can develop our inner resilience and confidence so that we come to view challenges as opportunities for personal growth and development. In this way we can all learn what it means to live stress free and be genuinely happy.

Better Buses for Palmy | He pahi pai mō Te Papaioea

As you may be aware Horizons was in the middle of engaging with the Palmy and Ashhurst community on the bus service when all of New Zealand went into lockdown. While the submission have remained open during this time, it has been difficult for some people to engage with the process and for them to have their say. Due to this difficulty, we are extending the feedback period for an additional two weeks. The submission period for the Palmy and Ashhurst review will now close on Friday 17 September 2021 at 5.00pm.

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff and others, we will not be running any face to face events over this extended period. Staff will still be available to answer queries, please email us at transport@horizons.govt.nz or call 0508 800 800 and ask to speak with a member of our transport team. We would really appreciate your support in sharing this update with your wider community.

Head to betterbuses.horizons.govt.nz. for more info and to submit feedback.
