Career Pathways Charter School Monthly News August 2021

Back to School and Face to Face

Masks are required for all. With vaccines approved and readily available we are easily able to add additional layers of protection against Covid 19 variants. Social distancing, frequent cleaning, increased air flow, and symptom monitoring will continue. Our focus is to be in school teaching and learning.

On Thursday, September 9, students and staff will all be back in the building ready for a new school year. Teachers will be meeting with families before school starts on Tuesday and Wednesday (9/7 & 8) to set goals, review transcripts, and class schedules. These meetings will be in person, via phone, or by video chat.

Blended Learning

Now with Covid, Blended, Online and Hybrid Learning have gained interest for more learners.

Blended Learning has been a part of Career Pathways Educational Programing since we opened in 2015. Blended Learning is when students learn both online and in the building. Our 11th and 12th graders who are balancing work and family duties, or those who need to catch up have been the focus of our Blended Learning program in the past. Our Dean of Students, Mr. Abshir personalizes each student’s courses to help them be successful. Mr. Abshir and our teachers work alongside students to assign coursework and help with understanding and progress. We have approximately 55 student using the Blended Learning courses each semester.

Preparing for a Great School Year!

Last week our Teacher Leader and Executive Director Ms. Liz Lonetti, began hosting new staff with training. This week our returning staff will join us. Our staff training covers all aspects of working in a public school.

As a teacher led school we rely heavily on the expertise of our team and bring in outside experts when needed. Training topics were determined via survey by the teachers in the spring.

For example, Ms. Glow, Ms. Liz, Ms. Luna and Mr. Abshir cover staff training for all of our various technology portals and learning applications; Ms. Alex updates us on the social emotional needs of our students, Ms. Jo teaches nonviolent crisis intervention training (CPI) and Ms. Liz leads us through teacher and staff leadership. Outside trainers are joining us for the Hope Survey, Virtual Job Shadow, and Origins Developmental Designs Education for Equity.

Backpacks and School Supplies

We are able to provide every student with a backpack and school supplies. We have been fortunate to be able to partner with Kids in Need and The Salvation Army to provide school supplies to all of our students free of charge.

Students may choose to bring their own. The school supply list is very basic if shopping on your own- 4-5 notebooks and folders, assorted pens and pencils, assorted highlighters, erasers, and a three ring binder optionally. Some students find notecards handy.

The biggest aid to students is their own natural curiosity about the world around them and desire to find answers to questions they ask!

We have partnered with with Tree Trust for another school year. This program targets students who are 16-21 years old and want to gain hands on experience in the construction industry. Students who apply and are accepted in Tree Trust have the opportunity to earn high school credit, money and certificates in the construction industry to give them a jump start on well paying careers. Tree Trust runs the course of the school year with students spending alternating weeks between Tree Trust and in school. Students are paid for both time learning with Tree Trust and for going to school! All supplies and Metro Transit transportation are provided. ICE CREAM SOCIAL

Our annual Ice Cream Social earlier this month welcomed several new families, community members, almost all of our returning staff and 2 new staff who joined us. Our ice cream treat supplier, Wally O. Wonka and his Leprechaun Dreamsicle are always a joy.
