There is a certain kind of fear that seems good. We talk about having a healthy fear of certain things. For example, it is much less likely that I am going to fall to my death when I visit Garden of the God’s in Southern Illinois than the steady stream of people that are determined to jump to the head of Camel Rock. I have a healthy fear of heights. Their lack of fear makes them much more likely to get hurt.
What are you afraid of?
In another sense fear is something that can get us into a lot of trouble. It is possible to be afraid of the wrong things. It is okay if you are afraid to fly in a helicopter unless you find yourself stranded in a massive flood on top of the roof and a helicopter is the only way for you to get to safety. The fear of rising water must be greater than your fear of flying or you will be washed away with your home.
What are you afraid of?
Fear can lead us into idolatry by convincing us that there is something that we need that God might not be able to provide or something that can harm us that God cannot protect us from. But God has said to us, “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32) Jesus died to make this possible. In baptism, the gift of the kingdom was given to you. There is nothing to fear but God and He has become your Father, thanks be to Jesus.
A Prayer for when you are afraid:
Lord Jesus Christ, You commanded the win and the waves, and they obeyed You. Speak peace to us when we are troubled by fear, By the power of your Word, calm our anxious hearts; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
