Viral Load of SARS-CoV-2 in Respiratory Aerosols Emitted by COVID-19 Patients while Breathing, Talking, and Singing

Duke-NUS Medical School One Health Senior Research Fellow, Dr. Kristen Coleman, and fellow researchers in Singapore measured viral aerosol emissions from COVID-19 patients as they engaged in common activities. Participants were asked to breathe, talk, and sing into a special aerosol collection device (Gesundheit II machine) which captures both coarse and fine viral particles. Talking and singing produced the most detectable viral RNA, and fine particles (≤ 5 μm in diameter) made up 85% of exhaled SARS-CoV-2 particles. Participants earlier in their course of illness were significantly more likely to release detectable viral RNA via respiratory aerosols, consistent with previous studies showing correlations between viral load and day of illness.

Influenza A Viruses are Likely Highly Prevalent on South African Swine Farms
Research Associate Professor of Virology and Microbiology in the School of Health Sciences, College of Health Sciences, South Africa, and Duke One Health collaborator, Dr. Mohamed Ezzat El Zowalaty recently worked with Duke One Health researchers in publishing a research report titled "Influenza A Viruses are Likely Highly Prevalent on South African Swine Farms" in the journal Transboundary and Emerging Diseases. This cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate evidence for cross-species transmission of influenza A virus between pigs and swine workers.

Dr. Lexi Sack accepting postdoc position at University of Notre Dame

Duke NIH D43 postdoctoral fellow Lexi Sack (who graduated with a PhD in Translational and Clinical Science from Tufts University in August), has recently accepted a postdoc position in Dr. Jason Rohr's lab at Notre Dame. This work will focus on controlling schistosomiasis in disadvantaged communities with a secondary focus on improving livestock production, as a portion of the human infections in the study region in Senegal are a hybrid with the cattle variety. Congratulations, Lexi!
